"Lying liars tell more lies." Why do we keep sharing it? It's maddening and waste of everyone's time. I really wish we could all just stop responding to the nonsense.

I think for me the most compelling answer for "why fund basic research?" (and the one most relevant to the people doing the work) is that humans are curious and finding stuff out makes us happy and fulfilled. Science is a thing humans like. Life would be more dull and sad if we didn't do it.

HM Aeron. They don’t seem all that great when you first sit in them, but they have a trick where you’re kinda forced into better posture, and I can sit comfortably for hours without aggravating my back issues. Expensive yes, but if you spend 8 hours a day in it it’s absolutely good value.

It will be great if this is all that's happening, but it seems unlikely to me. Why have everyone attend in person, on short notice? Even Hegseth would recognize that a "should have been an email" meeting would seriously harm his credibility with the only people who really need to respect him.
