Philosophical compass. Where do you fall on it?
A political compass where all of the labels have been replaced by the names of philosophers. Authoritarian is replaced by Hobbes, monarchist and namesake of stuffed tiger, whose most famous work "Leviathan" is about the need for a strong central authority governing society and keeping the populace in line. Libertarian is replaced by Paine, American revolutionary and egalitarian. In his work "Rights of Man", he argued for a government that serves the people with a strong safety net. Left-wing is replaced by Hume, an empiricist who believed that all knowledge is derived from sensory experience. He formulated the problem of induction, which meant that no knowledge could ever be perfectly correct. Right-wing is replaced by Descartes, a rationalist famous for the statement "I think, therefore I am". He reasoned that all sensory experience could be a lie, therefore, only deduction could be trusted, and the one thing that can be deduced by anyone is that there is some kind of "self" doing the deduction. He believed that this self was separate from the body, a position known as dualism.

An article for MSNBC by Steve Benen ( B E N E N, not to be confused with Steve Bannon). In bizarre cemetery video, Joni Ernst leans into ‘we are all going to die’ message. The Republican senator sparked a controversy with her rhetoric about her party's proposed Medicaid cuts. A follow-up video made matters worse. While many congressional Republicans have avoided holding town hall meetings with constituents in recent months, Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa agreed to attend an hourlong event early on Friday morning. She quickly offered the political world a timely reminder as to why so many GOP policymakers avoid such gatherings. The issue at hand, of course, was the Republicans’ far-right megabill — the inaptly named “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” — and when the discussion turned to health care policy, the senator tried to defend her party’s proposed Medicaid cuts, Ernst delivered a highly memorable line. One of her constituents said that people would die as a result of her party’s health care cuts, at which point the Iowa Republican said, “Well, we all are going to die.”
