Like the Down of a Thistle, Sarah Swan

Lesbian romance story in 18th century Scotland. Immersive as heck, really takes you into its story world. It is deftly written and engaging, raw in many senses - raw, passionate emotions abound in the story, which could've had little more pauses to breathe.

The Future of Nostalgia, Svetlana Boym

A non-fiction book I want to feature here, an amazing read on nostalgia combining memoir, academic historical analysis and philosophical essays. A ton of insight into human condition that made me have to put the book down and just think. Long staying power.

The Dying Earth, Jack Vance

A collection of six related but fairly independent stories set in far future where the sun is growing dim, the world is worn-out yet strange to the point it's just fantasy fiction. The original inspiration for D&D magic system! Really liked this read; engaging and fun.

Three Hearts and Three Lions, Poul Anderson

A WW2 era Dane ends up in a parallel fantasy world, in which Law and Chaos struggle for dominance. A surprisingly fun story & really enchanting worldbuilding. Really liked!

Fun fact: 3H3L is one of the foundational inspirations for Dungeons & Dragons.

My Saturday resting and chilling consists of playing Heroes of Might & Magic III and Cities Skylines. HoMM3 was one of my big childhood favorites and I return to it every few years, every time with somewhat fresh eyes. I am, again, astounded how well this game has aged. It's just like a fine wine 💙

The Eye of the World, Robert Jordan

Love when books take their time and let me smell the roses, but EOTW was often just meandering, even repetitive. Copies more Tolkien than Fionavar ever did. However, EOTW hints at, even promises, a rich world and an interesting story. I will check out the sequel.

The Wandering Fire, Guy Gavriel Kay

Second book in Fionavar series picks up after the first one. Classic fantasy in a way that is clearly inspired by Tolkien and traditional myths, but also is legitimately its own thing. Makes me anticipate reading the third book of the trilogy.

Gardens of the Moon, Steven Erikson

Re-reading the first Malazan book was an interesting experience. Book's _relative_ weaknesses compared to rest of the series are more apparent, but there was also newfound appreciation for a lot of things you'd catch only on a re-read. Love the series a lot!

The Summer Tree, Guy Gavriel Kay

Five university students end up in fictional fantasy world of Fionavar. Didn't hook me until after a bit, but I really enjoyed this read. I have some gripes, but none really ruin the book. A good classic fantasy book, told in a way where prose and setting match.

Nettle tea 🍵 Feeling a bit not great after definitely overextending myself over the last week (or month...) so I'm having this to drink 💚

Before starting Strange New Worlds season 3, doing a rewatch of seasons 1 and 2. Gosh dagnabbit I forgot how good it is from the very first episodes. I love basically every character both new and legacy, but Spock is worth mentioning separately just because how established the character is in Trek.

The Crippled God, Steven Erikson

It's a testament to Erikson's mastery of the craft that he sticks the landing in a series as complex and sprawling as Malazan Book of the Fallen. This is a truly grand epic and a satisfying conclusion to a series spanning ten massive books. 10/10. Unbelievable.

I have discovered I have much more energy than I had thought but also now I'm absolutely drained and even if it's just the two of us here on the country I'm so badly looking forward to going back home. At least in the meanwhile got some games to play on the Deck 👀

What perfect album came out when you were 16?

No perfect albums that year out of the albums that did come out, this one I like the most

Rimrunners, C. J. Cherryh

Another one from Cherryh in the A/U Universe. Homeless marine tries to hide her real identity and ends up on a ship hunting her old comrades. Didn't like as much as the previous one, but Cherryh's setting-work continues to be amazing and characters feel very real.
