Anyway, Charles Dickens's descriptions are delightful and he spends like three paragraphs describing how someone butters bread and somehow it is interesting and captivating and I love it!

I think that perspective makes it easier to stomach reading a doorstop of a book.

There are arcs to be sure, but these books aren't "meant" to be understood as a single story in the same way that TV shows aren't "meant" to be understood as a single story.

I mean halfway through we're suddenly told that this blacksmith that we've been reading about for 20 chapters actually has a journeyman assistant that hadn't been mentioned before and he's like the main character for a chapter then a recurring character for other chapters.
