3/x: Some of Bonestell's most famous pieces are of what most #astronomers were SURE the lunar landscape would like up close. This rough & jagged landscape was the general consensus until probes visited the moon more than a decade after this book was published. #SpaceArt

I have a fair number of older books, one of the best is Willy Ley & Chesley Bonestell's "The Conquest of Space", published in 1949. Bonestell's artwork is the soul of this work, some which I'd like to share: 1/x First is a "transcontinental" rocket plane #SpaceArt

8/x: A rare piece, the BGM-109 Gryphon, the ground-launched Tomahawk that was a key component of US tactical nuclear forces in Europe for all of 8 years until the INF Treaty was signed. Ironically, an accidental successor exists today as the Typhon. #aviation #missile #avgeeks

3/x Southern #Arizona was once home to a fascinating culture of desert irrigation farmers, referred to today as the Hohokam, with Casa Grande surviving to the modern era. This impressive structure was likely built between 1300-1350 AD & was occupied for a century. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth

2/x Next up, the Pueblos of Wupatki National Monument in northern Arizona. Established not long after the nearby Sunset Crater was formed (mid-11th century AD), which briefly enriched the soil enough for a small community to form. By ~1225 AD the good soil was gone & the people with it.

1/x Forgot for a sec that it's #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth, so let's honor those amazing cultures that thrived on this continent prior to European contact. 1st up, some amazing "Barrier Canyon" style #RockArt in Horseshoe Bend, Canyonlands National Park. Pics taken in 2023.

One of my favorite pieces of #aviationart, depicting a Turkish F-16A. Featured in Bill Yenne's "Aircraft of the U. S. Air Force & Its NATO Allies" (1987). Not sure on the artist sadly. #Avgeeks
