Tech by Choice is a nonprofit focused on helping marginalized communities thrive in tech.

Thriving in tech can mean different things. This could be transitioning into a tech role, landing that senior title, or using tech to create your own stream of income.

Using CERN data early 90's, building sites for fun mid-90's, running clubs building for the web late 90's - switched to f/t dev '99.

Getting to be around some of the smartest people, building some of the most exciting cutting edge web technology, and constantly learning is what keeps me here.

We're a community model after modeled after the Black Panther Party

The Black Panther Party created a 10 point program to highlight its guidelines & ideas on how to be in community.

Their 10th point hit's is where we pick up where they left off ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻✊

a uni tutor showed me how to make a website with flash while I was attempting (and failed) a music production degree

years later frustrated that my design work was being badly translated and ignored by web developers, I learned html and css & more flash mostly out of spite but ended up enjoying it

A question we should all be asking during interviews right now is, "Is your company currently profitable?" And "what's the company's strategy for handling the expected market downturn?" ... And on the flipside, employers should be ready to answer those questions, given our economic climate.

My dad told me I could make a lot of money and the only thing I ever actively showed any interest in / skill with was computers.

Thought I'd make video games, but business software paid more and was easier to get jobs for.

I stay because it's the only thing I'm qualified to do that pays this well.

Wanted to build games, haven't build a single game. Women in tech community, being able to make things I like, flexibility to work anywhere is the reason I've stayed. Had a lot of reasons to quit too but I love it too much.

Haven't found any other profession that:

* Is as lucrative
* Allows as much autonomy
* Offers the chance to problem solve
* Is focused on craft
* Lets me work with smart people
* Has as low barriers to entry

Kept me: solving problems, financial stability, career progression

To be able to transition lol. Transition is so extremely prohibitively expensive and healthcare in the US, already complete trash to begin with, rarely even covers trans healthcare.

Tech was the only option I had left to scrounge up the $100k+ needed for jaw surgery, FFS, BA, and electrolysis. 😭

This is a lot of work because FB Business Manager is a zoo.

It’s Friday and have a reason to celebrate!

NBC featured the work we’re doing to bringing Underestimated devs, designers, PMs, and more to BlueSky to build tools and community there.

Black Tech Twitter, trans users and more marginalized groups flock to Bluesky
As Twitter becomes more inhospitable to marginalized communities, they hope to shape Bluesky’s culture early — with their voices at the center.
