And after some fussing about with an electrical tape based rear mate and a bit of cleaning we have the final stack-up

@fleeks.art's udon dragon - but a bit cyberpunk

Yoinked the backlight stack from a salvaged monitor, clipped to size. This is the first test fit, worked surprisingly well.

I'm gonna fix the individual diode bleed on the left, then make parts of the backlight flicker like a broken CFL :D

Have Chee
Chee on bike maybe? Or behind decks? Or whatever you wanna draw him like

One final note: After the call with the engineer, the manufacturer actually agreed to send some blank masks. That's the stuff that creates the pictogram on pedestrian signals. So in the future I plan on getting some custom art to laser cut my own. Furry traffic light!

With that done, we finally mounted the thing on our wall. It works, is controllable, and takes 9V DC now.
I did have a fun little scare because the brick I was using has a loose plug. Changed, fixed.
We still don't know what to indicate with it tho lol (no, not the bathroom, stop asking).

I also had the original mounting arms. I shortened them, producing my worst weld yet, then have em a shotty coat of black spraypaint.

I put everything back together and taped the loose cables to the front of the housing. Not the most elegant solution, but good enough in this case.
You can actually see the controller in the middle between the top two modules. Tiny thing with plugs. The board on the left is its power supply.

I wanted the light to be controllable through the same smart home system as all of our lights, so I got an ESP32C6, which does ZigBee. The LED drivers are dimmable, meaning with some very simple firmware, I can now control and dim the modules independently.

After a short call with one of their engineers, who was also very confident the LEDs were still good (at that point I still had no idea if it was even alive still), I had the numbers I needed and got it to run off a lab power supply.
From this I ordered fitting LED drivers (on the right here).

Side note: As you might have noticed, the entire thing is modular. I also have a pedestrian signal (which is where the pictogram masks are from). It's the same thing but with the yellow middle bit removed.
The cables are passed through the mounting screw on either the top or bottom.

While the modules look bulky, the light source is actually pretty dang small. While this particular one is from the late '00s, they're already LED driven!

So what was the problem?
The integrated power supply takes 40V 50Hz AC, which if you know anything about electrical stuff is pretty weird. 2/n

Something I've been working on for a while is a traffic light. I got it off the trash pile of the manufacturer / operator and it's been sitting in my basement for years. 1/n

The name "Kamehameha" actually stems from the first king of Hawaii. TIL

Here's his statue in the US Capitol. Was more than surprised when I saw that name plaque today.

Rest in peace, Akira Toriyama

The jellyfish (exhaust) and the big Dipper in the back really make this image for me.

First rocket launch in person, what an amazing experience!
