Our EDO Hannah discovered Stigmella aceris, a moth first recorded in Yorkshire in 2021, on Maple close to our offices this week. This species has rapidly become common around the York area over the last few years, having moved north: yorkshiremoths.co.uk/micros.php?b...

Grassland fungi season is finally in full swing and so are we, with both events and surveys. Once again we are finding new sites with rare and beautiful fungi, including some really special discoveries such as the Sunset Waxcap - for which only a handful of records exist! 🍄

The Live Labs 2 project is continuing in Hayton and Burnby (tinyurl.com/4z84wmyy) and we've been collecting and processing lots of camera and audio sensor material as part of our role supporting the project's nature recording aspect. A highlight was this fantastic Badger captured on trail camera! 📸

Last week Josie and Hannah visited North Yorkshire Archives, examining fascinating 18th century maps to help inform the last stages of the Ancient Woodland Inventory update project, building evidence to support the inclusion or exclusion of 'new' ancient woodland on the updated inventory 🌳🔎

introducing students to biological recording. We've been attending the day for over 10 years and always enjoy the chance to share our knowledge of ecological data 👥

Despite the rain, we trapped 76 moths of 25 species at Jubilee Pasture in the Yorkshire Wolds at the end of July. After five trapping sessions the species total for the site is 46, Six-striped Rustic being only the second record for the 10km square, the previous record being from 1973!

Last week we provided three camera traps to Sheriff Hutton Nature Group, a local group we are supporting located north of York. SHNG will be using the traps as part of a Hedgehog monitoring project around the parish and surrounding areas, with the records provided to NEYEDC 🦔

It seems to have been a good year for Hawk-moths, with the NEYEDC team and moth recording volunteers trapping a variety of stunning specimens over the past few weeks including Privet, Eyed, and Pine Hawk-moths, alongside the more familiar Poplar and Elephant species 🤩

Our surveyor Claire visited Pickering Castle recently as part of our programme of local wildlife site surveys for 2025, where the motte and adjacent ditches are designated for their grassland interest. Claire found 48 different wildflowers and a total of 80 species of plants! 🌼

Our EDOs Josie and Hannah, who are completing our update of the Ancient Woodland Inventory, have been at local archives this week, inspecting historical material with the hope of extending the chronology of woods identified in the update back further than 19th century Epoch 1 maps. Fascinating! 🗺️🔎

The warm nights have allowed us to moth trap at Jubilee Pasture between Bugthorpe and Kirby Underdale on the Halifax Estate in East Yorkshire. The grassland was looking lovely and we managed to trap a nice array of moths, including the ever popular show-stopper - the Poplar hawk-moth.
