Christmastime here in Provence. Just came back from a lovely choral concert in the neighborhood 13th-century church, Saint-Jean de Malte.

Lively local bistro where we went to celebrate the overthrow of Macron's austerity-hawk government Wednesday. World-class foie de veau persillade and a decent local red. Five minute walk from our building, where the ground floor hosts a pharmacy, some shops, and a piano store.

In the center of a genuine city, where the streets are for people and the buildings are inhabited, their ground-floor shops family-owned. It's inviting, there's a sense of place. A place worth caring about.

Cities don't have to be ugly and hostile. Cars make them that way. Europeans have had beautiful cities for, like, ever. Then they colonized North America and spawned General Motors.

Here's what a street in the city center is supposed to look like. Been living here for over a year, car-free.
