Hitler did everything legally. If we are wondering why Germans didn't stop Hitler before it got too far, it's because everything he did was all "legal."

I guess that oath he took to "defend and protect the Constitution of the United States" didn't apply to it's link on the White House webpage.

to amend the Constitution. According to Taney's majority decision, slavery was affirmed by the Constitution (it wasn't actually, but that's what he "found") AND black people were not citizens. The 13th & 14th Amendments were both ratified in direct response to the Dred Scott finding.

When the case reached SCOTUS, Chief Justice Robert B. Taney found that the plaintiff had no grounds to bring the suit for two reasons. 1) The Federal Government (according to Taney) had no jurisdiction to decide whether a territory was slave or free. AND

In the Dred Scott v Sanford case, an enslaved man Scott & his wife Harriet sued for their freedom due to having lived in free territory. Precedent held that if a slave was held for an extended period in free territory, in this case Fort Snelling in Wisconsin Territory, they were free.

The thought that the 1868 ratification of the 14th Amdnt was a response to the Civil War is not quite whole. In fact, while the impetus was the end of the Civil War, Section 1 of the amndt was written in direct response to the Dred Scott v Sanford case (1857), four years before the Civil War.

"Hey dad, you folding laundry? Cool, I'll just lay across your shoulders. By the way, I know I'm supposed to be the barn cat, but if I'm really good, can I stay inside?"
January 12, 2025 at 9:49 PM
Because of the cold weather and snow, I allowed the mousing "barn cat" in the house under the condition of a bath, flea treatment, & deworming.

It's now been over a week. I think *she* thinks if she plays her cards right she can stay inside w the dogs.

I'm almost convinced.

What say you, BlueSky?

TIL: Susanna Hoffs, lead singer of The Bangals, is still smoking hot at 65.

TI(also)L: my first crush was 25 years older than me and I don't know how I feel about that.

The oldest daughter and I on the couch, fire in the fireplace, Darby snug in her bed, sidewalk and driveway pre-salted, watching the snow fall, ready for anything.

Just found out the "40yo generator" from my last post is actually almost 50. My granddad bought it during the "Great Blizzard of '78," he hauled it to Fort Monroe, VA after Hurricane Isabel in '03 to help w clean up. I got it after he passed 3 years ago. The original Sears #Craftsman still ticking.

All the Lucas Film Star Wars movies after the Original Star Wars trilogy, including the prequels, were worse than the "Star Wars: Expanded Universe" books c. 1978-2005. While LucasFilm/Disney considers the prequels/sequels canon, the books were better & will always be canon

Mara Jade Skywalker FTW.

My girl is out of surgery. Waiting for her to wake up. Pins in knee and elbow but in one piece.

We got so lucky.

What is one show you enjoyed and either it wasn't renewed or it was cancelled mid-season?

Mine was Jericho.

So much potential!

One of my favorite little-known facts about #Greenland is that the elite Sirius Dog Sled Patrol, a long range recon unit that patrols the Arctic, is still issued the U.S. Rifle, cal .30(-06), Model of 1917 aka the "American Enfield" of WWI due to it's rugged reliability in unimaginable conditions.
