And sometimes you don’t need characters at all. Films sometimes provide great experiences and ideas without great characters. 2001 A Space Odyssey has no great *human* characters. But it has great ideas and experiences, and it’s up there with the best pieces of art in the medium of movie/film.

Having said that, I tend to like movies that try to explore ideas and experiences, and that’s when movies turn into films. Characters in films have a higher ceiling for nuance and truth than characters in movies. The characters in Jaws aren’t nearly as interesting as those in Cleo From 5 to 7.

In Jaws, the characters are better than the situation. The last 3rd of the movie is the best part, where the personalities of the three leads (the captain, the cop, and the marine biologist) is explored. Guardians Of The Galaxy is another movie where the characters are better than the situation.

Agreed. I can have sympathy for the unique state of mind of the people who first formed Israel (right after Shoah), but that doesn’t mean A.) that they went about creating and maintaining/growing the state it in a moral manner or B.) that anyone should build a state based on religion or ethnicity.

In general, this is something people get wrong about vegans / they would never buy “ethics farming” products because it’s not about finding humane ways to exploit beings. Most vegans (me included) want to abolish animal agriculture altogether, factory and local farming.
