Husband and father. Also, musician, musicologist, and professor. Also also, surfer, bicyclist, and reluctant runner. Also also also, a semi-polyglot, which isn’t a real thing.
Not far of fast but it’s SOMETHING. I need to celebrate tiny victories like this more often.

“A.I. is more like the nuclear bomb than the printing press or the assembly line: Its progenitors saw its destructive potential from the start but felt desperate to beat competitors to the punch.”

It’s such a sorry indictment of contemporary education that my first thought is, “Well, at least they didn’t use AI. Maybe I should give them points for that.”

One of my colleagues is *really* convinced he possesses some sort of superior intellect. He has mentioned how he is often the “smartest person in the room.”

It seems to me, “smart” people don’t usually say stuff like that.

Teaching an online class in 2025 feels like a fool’s errand. 20 years ago, a lot of us questioned the validity/utility of online classes, but the Ed Admins wouldn’t really listen. Now, we’re stuck with online as a “norm,” and it’s turned into a bit of a joke.

I keep seeing people say that Jimmy Kimmel “lied” during that monologue. I’ve watched it a few times, and I’m left scratching my head; I can’t find the “lie.” Maybe someone can point it out to my idiot brain?

I can’t tell if what I’m feeling is regular-old mid-40s existential dread, of if this is something unique to me / the current state of things.

I have been making a, voluntary, extra monthly contribution to my union for the last several years. Yesterday, I finally got up the guts to ask how to stop making this donation (it is deducted from my salary automatically).

I have a colleague whose last name is Mahler. He pronounces it “mailer.” When introducing himself, he says “like the composer.”

I keep wondering if he thinks that composer’s name is/was pronounced “mailer.” I think that’d be news to Gus!
