Right. This is the most common sense take. Monitoring everyone's communications is labor-intensive, which means it costs money. No one is going to do it without good reason.
There is, however, automated software that can examine outgoing messages for some types of violations, like sending SSNs.

I prefer embedded markup in text documents compared to WYSIWYG word processing like Word, at least for large documents. That's why LaTeX is still popular.

Those governments also weren't fully socialist, or at least the government never seized the means of production.
The only real examples you have are the Soviet Union, China, North Korea, and possibly the countries under their control, all very authoritarian if not dictatorships.
