Normal wastewater treatment = nitrification followed by denitrification; requires lots of energy and produces CO₂.
Adding alkalinity to wastewater would reduce CO₂ outgassing to the atmosphere.
But why not just use anammox (anaerobic ammonium oxidation), which uses less energy and makes less CO₂?

I often show my students this visualization of how atmospheric CO₂ travels around the globe. Our attitude toward burning fossil fuels would change significantly if we could actually see CO₂.
