Bill Dixon would have turned 100 today. This clip (with Art Davis) is from the 1981 film Imagine The Sound.

Today would have been Bill Dixon’s 100th birthday. Not a single day goes by where I don’t apply or recall something I learned from him. “The reward has GOT to be that THIS is what you DO.”

Today would have been John Coltrane’s 99th birthday. This photo of him with Bill Dixon at the 1966 Newport Festival was, for years, the only photo I’d seen of Coltrane smiling; Bill told me, “As you can see, I’m probably ranting about something.”

I’d heard a few of her songs on the radio — WXRT in Chicago played her records regularly in the ‘80s and early ‘90s — but inexplicably didn’t listen to this until the other day. Such an astoundingly perfect album, with surprising (to me) appearances by Clarke Peters and Kenney Jones.

From 1972, L-R: Speedy Keen, Terence Stamp, and Keith Moon backstage at a benefit concert for the French Communist Party, headlined by the Who.

(Terence’s brother Chris was one of the Who’s managers.)

Ozzy told the PMRC and their neo-fascist goons to get fucked. Not one single solitary person on this planet has ever listened to a speech by Tipper Gore or any other fundamentalist Christian dipshit and thought, “This is the greatest thing I’ve ever heard.”

Great episode, and I’m wondering why I’ve always known “Sweet Pea” but never heard “Dizzy” before. Also surprised Roe never recorded a spoken-word album of his right-wing views, like fellow career-loser Johnny Calhoun.

If you play “Revolution 9” backwards, a voice says, “Turn me on, Batman.”
