I think the banal answer is: he’s very rich and powerful and good at networking and this how people act around very rich and powerful people.

I once sat next to Sumner Redstone at a charity event I was covering. I was young and he was the richest man I had yet met. When the entree arrived, he took a wad of gum from his mouth, put it on the side of his plate, ate, and then replaced it. I have never since had any illusions about the monied.
