MACWEEK • 01.09.95 Digital Ocean to make a more rugged Newton Waterproof chassis protects the Tarpon By James Staten While Motorola Inc.'s Marco may be getting most of the attention, another wireless Newton quietly made its debut last week. Digital Ocean Inc., joining forces with Harris Corp.'s Dracon Division, has developed a wireless Newton MessagePad that can really take a licking. The Tarpon is based on a MessagePad 120 but adds a built-in wireless LAN transceiver, voice-capable modem and back-lighting. It is encased in a reinforced, waterproof chassis capable of withstanding a 6-foot drop onto concrete, Digital Ocean said. The unit is powered by a custom nickel-metal-hydride battery that provides up to 20 hours of use, according to the company. The wireless LAN transceiver supports communications up to 230.4 Kbps and features two internal antennas stored in the back of the unit. Digital Ocean said the transceiver can be replaced by a wireless Ardis or RAM Mobile Data transceiver or a global position satellite system. Where the MessagePad's serial port normally appears, Tarpon sports a water-resistant port for serial communications and connections to industrial telephone receivers. Serial connections can also be made through contacts on the back of the unit when it is docked in a specially designed charging bay.

eMate 300 Goes to Head of the Class: Funky New Newton Offers Cool Design for the Classroom WHEN IS A POWERBOOK not a PowerBook? When it's the eMate 300, Apple's first Newton made specifically for the education market. The nearly indestructible ABS plastic shell is designed to take the kind of abuse only a fifth-grader can dish out. The chassis also features a whimsical design — it looks like something straight out of a Batman movie — sure to appeal to image-conscious grade-schoolers. Perhaps more important is the ease of use the Newton OS offers. Unlike a Windows- or Mac OS-based portable, the eMate has no hard drive and, therefore, offers considerably faster boot times. Also, because the application is the interface in the Newton OS, students don't have to work with a file-based metaphor to get work done. And what could be more intuitive to the finger-paint crowd than the ability to draw directly on the screen? The eMate comes standard with a nickel metal hydride battery pack that Apple claims can power the portable for up to 28 hours of continuous use. The eMate 300 is a high-style, inexpensive portable well suited to the mobile-computing needs of the education market. About the only serious mistake Apple made was underestimating the eMate's potential appeal. At under $800, we predict a healthy trade in black-market eMates developing within weeks of the first unit shipment, sometime in the first quarter of 1997. PROS: It's cheap. It's got a nice screen.
