this “mech” is getting replaced with a different kind of captive ball thing, but i love the idea behind this one

trashland getting absolutely torn apart

with this new version, i’ve incorporated it as one unit, but the metal guides screw directly into the playfield via 12mm steel spacers. this puts them right at the center of the pinball, ensuring that the ball rides on the metal. these will finally function exactly as traditional ball guides do

the problem i’ve had previously is that with 3d printed guides, the impact from the ball will bounce off of it rather that being smoothly redirected (at most angles). in this photo the small loop toward the bottom, and the loop in the vertical section above both didn’t work quite right bc of this

so, normal ball guides in commercial games are steel strips that are screwed directly to the playfield. when the ball hits a guide at any angle besides 90 degrees, that impact gets absorbed and redirected such that the ball will glide smoothly along the guide

new parts day for trashland. this is kind of a minor/technical update, but at the same time should make a couple of key shots feel much better. i love my 3d printed parts in most scenarios, but for the ones these are upgrading they fall flat

it’s been a while since i’ve done too planty a piece

i have been obsessed with william morris since roughly 2016. decoration, ornament, and craft are all both important to art and important art forms.

also a detail of the current cabinet art

i needed some good photos of house of flesh and blood for something, so here is a nice photo of the playfield and the outside-the-cabinet loop. for context, the playfield for this game is 16” by 18” (compared to the normal 20.25” by 45”)

here’s the underbelly of trashland!

yeah, games before about the mid 70s were entirely electromechanical! i’m not super knowledgable about how all the relay logic all works, but the 10s score dial has a similar piece on it, so if that number and the match are the same when it checks, the connection is complete and it gives the credit
June 24, 2025 at 4:56 PM
on really old games it was a physical relay, which is neat. i don’t actually know the full origin story of when/why it first came around, i’m going to have to do some research here!
June 24, 2025 at 4:46 PM
so, after a game is done, it’ll pick a random 2 digit number (10, 20, 30, etc). if that matches any of the last two digits on a score, you get a free game! it’s one of those elements that’s been on games since the 60s, and has sort of stuck around
June 24, 2025 at 4:34 PM
like here’s one from a 1979 game. “points are scored as indicated” is a fun sentence lol

and the finished version!
