Citizens in both countries view trade deficits as signs of national weakness—especially when the imbalance is with a political rival. Power concerns, not just individual economic factors, shape how people think about trade.

Using parallel survey experiments in the 🇺🇸 and 🇨🇳(n=4,181), I find that:
• Deficits are viewed more negatively than surpluses.
• Deficits with adversaries elicit stronger disapproval.
• In the U.S., fear of being “overtaken” by China amplifies deficit aversion.
