Elga’s fish research concentrated on the lifestyle and the environment of jawed fishes, along with accumulating biostratigraphic data from Belarus, Ukraine, Russia (Urals, Siberia, Arctic). She was proud of her Estonian ethnic heritage (pictured). Her global mobility was restricted by the USSR.

Elga was born in independent Estonia in 1928. She graduated with doctorate in Geology in 1955. A mother of two, and took her into the field. She acted as Senior Palaeontology Researcher the Institute of Geology of Estonia from 1959 till 1992.

Elga sadly has not witnessed the meme explosion (especially focused in Japan) inspired by her palaeoart. Here is a photograph of her in a later age, with box full of fish models.

Elga passed away in 2016, aged 87. She worked as an independent researcher till her passing, being a second author on 2014 Nature paper on placoderm copulation (nice).

She also was a prolific palaeoartist, creating wooden models of fishes appearing in museums across the Baltics.
