I wanted to share about an interesting KAL I’m participating in. It’s being hosted on IG. It’s called the Where We Knit KAL. The idea is to knit something inspired by where you live 🧶 I’ve chosen the Roost Pullover by Amy Christoffers and Jamieson’s Spindrift yarn. Details in alt text. #knitsky
When I heard about the Where We Knit KAL (aka knit-a-long) I was intrigued. Most of the time when I hear about KALs, I am knee deep in an existing project or have too many projects already lined up. This time though, the theme of the KAL grabbed my attention and lined up perfectly with projects that I wanted to knit. . The theme of the KAL is to knit a project inspired by where you live. I think I live in a pretty inspiring place. Prince Edward Island is a place with big, beautiful skies, rich red soil, water views, capes, sandy beaches, winding river ways, and a rolling patchwork of farmland. . I have three projects that I feel would be great for this KAL. I shared them in my last post. The first is the Roost Pullover by Amy Christoffers @savoryknitting. I first came across this pattern in a beautifully written post by @thehealthyknitter. She’d knit three versions of this sweater in colour schemes based upon three trips she’d taken to Shetland. One really spoke to me. She called it her ‘water and weeds’ version. She was kind enough to share the specific Jamieson’s colours that she used. These colours felt very close to my inpiration photos. So I knit a swatch to see if I was close (had to replace one colour I didn’t have). The only thing I felt was really missing from my first swatch was a colour to represent the rich red soil of PEI. So I swapped out the brown and replaced it with a reddish brown. . And voila, I have a colour scheme inspired by where I live. It’s a PEI soil and shoreline inspired colour scheme. . The KAL runs from 1 Nov - 31 Jan. For the Jamieson’s Spindrift lovers out there, my colour scheme is as follows: MC: Stonewash CC1: Dewdrop CC2: Eucalyptus CC3: Yellow Ochre CC4: Paprika CC5: Sand A view of the West River, PEI. This week’s #ShowMeYourKnits prompt: CABLES. I used to only knit cable knit projects. Then I found stranded colourwork 🙃 But I still dabble in cable knits here and there. I’ve gotten somewhat ambitious (and maybe crazy) and am knitting a pullover for my son (that he had better wear!).

My progress so far on the Menton 2 pullover for my son. The yarn is a lovely heathered green and it is so hard to photograph! I’ve gotten the hang of the cable pattern and doing the cables without a cable needle, so the second sleeve is going in faster. Yarn is Gathering Yarn’s Haynes Creek Heathers in colourway Cedar. A little closer view of the cables 😊 I used the tubular cast on for the cuffs and it turned out so lovely! I think I’d only ever used it on fingerless mitts before. Had a wonderful 2 days of learning at the PEI Fibre Fest in Charlottetown. Thoroughly enjoyed the marketplace and picked up special items to add to my tools and stash. Learned about how to work better with hand painted yarn, took an intro to intarsia, and learned to make Dorset buttons. #knitsky 🧶
A good friend of mine, Laura, was vending at the market 😊 She creates her own ‘art batts’, handspun yarn, stitch markers, has great yarny merch (tees and sweatshirts), and more. Her business is called Louis and Jane. Here we are modeling the vests we knit 😊 Mine is the Sea Faerdy vest. A little view of Laura’s art batts, fun yarny sweatshirt, stitch markers and more. Another friend was also vending her amazing handspun yarn and beautiful batts. This is her bubble yarn and it is so joyful! Her name is Sue Smith and her business is Paisley Defender. These are the three Dorset buttons that I learned to make during one of my classes. We started with the dark blue one (wool), then the light blue (#5 cotton thread), and then the fun one with the sheep (yes, that’s a sheep 🙃).

Excited to attend our local fibre festival this week! Have 3 interesting classes and a great festival marketplace to enjoy. Cast on my 2nd Musselburgh hat to have a portable knit to take with me. Still need to knit the button bands on my cardigan, and am working on a cable knit for my son 🧶

My Melby Yoke cardigan is almost done! Just need to knit the button bands and add buttons. Pattern is by Gudrun Johnston and yarn is Jamieson’s Spindrift. I’ve cut the steek, so I’m ready to get started as soon as I carve out some time. I cast on my second ever Musselburgh hat in order to have a portable knit to take with me to out local fibre festival. The yarn is a lovely self striping yarn from Mud Punch in a colourway with the best name: ‘Dagmar goes to Shetland’. I love its greens, peach, red and burgundy. Almost done knitting the first sleeve on the Menton 2 pullover for my son. I don’t knit cables as much anymore and had forgotten how long they take 🙃 At least I’ve learned to knit without a cable knit. That’s saving me tons of time! This year’s Shetland Wool Week hat, the Aal Ower Toorie was a super fun knit. I always love knitting with Jamieson’s yarn and this pattern was a great one! This is the Ridley Hat by Meghan Babin. I questioned my sanity knitting a ridiculous brim in 2x2 ribbing with a 2.25mm needle 🤪 But I loved knitting the cables. A Shetland Wool Week hat from a few years back. This is the Buggiflooer beanie. Knit up in Knit Picks Palette (this was before I discovered my love of knitting with Jamieson’s Spindrift). This is the Sunflower Power beanie. I have finished all the knitting and just need to sew down the brim. I finished it near the end of hat season last year. Love the crazy bright coloured yarn from Hello Stella. I won’t be hard to miss in this hat 🙃

This past weekend’s #ShowMeYourKnits prompt included things you knit that bring JOY ✨ I have to say that for the most part, all my knits have brought me joy and comfort too. I am particularly happy when knitting colourwork and when mastering a new to me knitting skill (most recently lace).

Modeling my first Sea Faerdy vest by Gudrun Johnston (I’ve since knit a second one in a different colour scheme…see next photo). This was a joy to knit! I loved seeing the pattern take shape! Knit in Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift. My seeding Sea Faerdy vest. I love how the change in colour scheme accentuates different parts of the pattern. I’m the darker colour scheme I find that the star pattern really pops. I’m this colour scheme I find that the diamonds pop more. Also knit entirely in Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift. I’m currently knitting the Melby Yoke cardigan by Gudrun Johnston (while wearing the Peerie Shop Cardi by Mary Jane Mucklestone). I’m really looking forward to finishing the second sleeve and then joining in the round to complete the Fair Isle yoke 😊 My first challenging lace knit. This is the Floriosa shawl by Justyna Lorkowska. This was a challenging knit and very hard on my hands. I had to take a few weeks off of knitting after I’d finished it. More breaks and stretching in the future! Knit up in Julie Asselin Merletto in Rose Gold.

I’m modeling a Musselburgh hat by Ysolda Teague. Knit in self striping yarn by Mud Punch in the colourway Dagmar goes to Shetland. The colours in the stripes include light and dark peachy tones, maroon, and three shades of green. I knit this hat for my cousin (in Feb 2024) who was fighting an aggressive form of brain cancer. They sadly passed away in Nov 2024. The view of the Musselburgh hat from the top down. I am modeling the Leith Hat that I knit for a friend (in May 2024) who was fighting cancer. He sadly passed away in late August 2025. It is knit in Espace Tricot’s Jolly DK. I think the colourway was Robin’s Egg Blue.

Also, went to a small locally owned toy store that has a wee yarn corner. Only needed 2.75mm DPNs 🙃 but these lace skeins of malabrigo were so gorgeous that I brought them home too 😍🧶

Summer’s end and back to school grind caught up with me. Haven’t shared much knitting lately. I knit a lot of small things this summer…kerchiefs and shawls as gifts. Easy to pick up & put down, not too taxing. Back to knitting my Melby Yoke cardi now. Loads of stockinette to get through 🙃

Outside on my back deck in the sun. Feet up on the outdoor coffee table and making progress on my Melby Yoke cardigan by Gudrun Johnston. It’s a fingering weight knit, and bottom up construction, so the miles and miles of stockinette I have to knit before the fun yoke may take me a good while. Not to mention the two sleeves that I also need to knit. I’m loving this combination of colours. It feels joyful to me. The MC is called Nighthawk. All yarn is from Jamieson’s. I stayed out knitting on the back deck so long that the sun moved around to the front of the house. Still have my feet up on the outdoor coffee table. Making more progress on my Melby Yoke cardigan. Wearing my Peerie Shop Cardi by Mary Jane Mucklestone. Moved to the front of the house to follow the sun 😊 Still plugging away at knitting my Melby Yoke cardi. I can’t wait to get to the lovely yoke! But first I have to knit the two sleeves and join them with the body in the round (this design is steeked). This is the colour scheme for the yoke on my Melby Yoke cardi. It’s my own play on the designer’s colour scheme. A bit more bright and joyful 😊 Looking forward to getting to this stage in the project. Knitting stockinette in fingering weight takes a loooooong time.

This week’s #ShowMeYourKnits theme is BABY 😊 There’s nothing quite so satisfying as knitting up a baby sweater in a fraction of the time of an adult one! Here are a few of my recent ones. Antler cardigan by Tin Can Knits, Curlicue Yoke and also Fox Baby yoke both by Claudia Quintanilla.

The yoke has small fox faces all around the neck. I’ve since stitched in the eyes using duplicate stitch. All that’s left is to sew a button at the back of the neck where there’s a little gap to help it get over a baby’s head.

This week’s #ShowMeYourKnits prompt is SHAWLS 🧶 I have great fun knitting shawls in between sweaters and cardigans and other accessories. There are so many wonderful patterns out there! These are only a few of the ones that I’ve knit in the last year or so. More details in alt text.
The Fleur Shawl by Espace Tricot was a fun knit and it’s so cozy and squishy to wear 😊 Knit in Woolberry Fibre Co DK and Sweet Skein O Mine lace. I knit the full version of the Hansel hap back in March/April. The pattern is by Gudrun Johnston. I learned a lot and really had fun seeing it take shape. The main colour was Briggs and Little Sport and the contrast colours were all Jamieson’s Spindrift. I really love knitting the Dotted Rays shawl by Stephen West. This is my third one! It was a pattern that I quickly got the hang of and found was pretty portable 😊 Knit in Fleece Artist’s Organic Cottage Socks in their Thousand Islands colourway. This is the Aestlight Shawl by Gudrun Johnston. I love its mix of lace and garter stitch. Knit in Briggs and Little Sport in Sheep’s Grey.

The pattern definitely pops more in the lace weight yarn. I’m knitting another one in the same yarn but darker colourway and I love it even more 😊
I am holding up my current knitting project, a Snaraness kerchief. Pattern is by Gudrun Johnston. Yarn is Eldon lace from Fleece and Harmony in colourway Vineyard. The pattern has a floral lace motif that really pops in the lace weight yarn and dark colourway.

I recently paused knitting my 2nd Sea Faerdy vest while traveling. I took along a super portable project, the Snaraness kerchief 🧶 I knit my 1st one in fingering weight yarn (Jamieson’s Spindrift) while waiting for my lace weight yarn to arrive (Fleece and Harmony Eldon lace). A fun knit!

I was finally able to take a somewhat decent photo of my Foliosa shawl by Justyna Lorkowska 😊 It’s a design full of lovely details and I really enjoyed knitting it. I did find knitting with the lace weight yarn was hard on my hands. I had to take a break for a week or so after I finished! #knitsky
I am facing away from the camera and modeling my Foliosa lace shawl. I was finally dressed up for an occasion and remembered to take a (somewhat) good photo of my shawl. This was definitely a challenging but enjoyable project for me. I’m relatively new to lace. Knitting this pattern with lace weight yarn really ended up hurting my hands and forearms a good deal. I had to take a week or so off knitting after I finished this shawl. I am standing in front of my garden shed here 🙃 The tractor tire is a nice addition to the photo 🤦🏼‍♀️ I am facing away from the camera and modeling my Foliosa lace shawl. My adventures in colourwork continue 😊 I’m still working on my 2nd Sea Faerdy vest in the light colour scheme. I’m also swatching for the Melby Yoke cardigan 🧶 Going with the bright and happy colour scheme. Did a few experiments in my swatch and the final decision was an easy one for me 😊

Still working away on my second Sea Faerdy vest (pattern by Gudrun Johnston). This one is the light MC version that is offered in the pattern. I had to substitute in a different dark blue as I couldn’t find the one in the pattern in any Canadian shops. I’m really happy with the colour scheme. It’s amazing to me how different the pattern looks in the lighter colour scheme. Very different elements in the Fair Isle pattern are accentuated as compared to the dark colour scheme. I started swatching for Gudrun Johnston’s Melby Yoke cardigan yesterday. I’m using somewhat different colours than what is in the pattern. Not huge changes from her colour scheme, but I’m working with colours that I had on hand in my stash. I also had to find a MC that I could source enough balls of from a Canadian shop. I’m happy with my choices right off the bat. I did go on to test out a few other colours (see next photo) but ultimately I’m going with those shown here. My complete test swatch for my Melby Yoke cardigan. I had to knit a few other test colours to prove to myself that the ones I’d started with were THE colours 🙃 The ones are started with feel bright and happy to me 😊 Here’s what the yoke in my Melby Yoke cardigan will look like 😊 I sure do love Fair Isle knitting!

I really enjoy knitting this particular shawl pattern. It’s portable in the beginning stages and then scratches just the right itch once you get to the lace and the edging. #knitsky

Half way through the last part of my current Aestlight shawl project 😊 Knitting the zigzag edging around the border was a neat new skill when I knit my first one of these. Great to learn new things! Once it’s washed and blocked the little peaks along the edge stand out much more clearly.

Working on my 3rd Aestlight shawl 🧶 (a gift) Using Briggs & Little Sport in Sheep’s Grey. Why I enjoy the pattern: it’s portable & easy when knitting the garter st 🔺; the Bird’s Eye lace is fun to knit; the edging was a new skill for me (knit perpendicular to the initial knitting). #knitsky
Knitting my third Aestlight shawl by Gudrun Johnston. It starts with a garter stitch triangle until you have 152 sts across. Then you pick up the yarn overs on the outer edges of the triangle and you knit the Bird’s Eye lace (that’s the stage that I’m at now). Then comes the edging which is knit perpendicular to the lace. A really enjoyable pattern to knit. A closer up view of the Bird’s Eye lace on my Aestlight shawl. Knit up in Briggs and Little Sport in Sheep’s Grey. My very first Aestlight shawl 😊

These were the only projects I could find in my Ravelry projects list that had yellow in them (other than a few shawls knit in hand dyed yarn with touches of yellow) 🙃 #knitsky
Loved knitting this year’s Shetland Wool Week hat! It’s called the Aal Ower Toorie. The pattern knit in this colour scheme sort of reminds me of argyle patterns. The top of the Aal Ower Toorie. Such a beautifully designed pattern. A little pop of yellow in this kid’s hat that I knit for my husband’s cousin’s toddler. It’s the Cartography hat by Tin Can Knits. Might be hard to tell, but there are pops of a mustardy yellow in my Bressay sweater by Marie Wallin 😊
