We had free lunch at my elementary school, but if we lost our lunch tickets, they fed us moldy cheese sandwiches, even though it was known that we were in the free lunch program. My mother got very angry and had a talk with them about that! But nothing changed.
I was a hungry kid. I often went without school lunch because I didn’t have the money.
I later moved to Oklahoma and attended school on native land. Guess what the Cherokee did? They fed every kid with no questions asked. I was able to learn with a full belly with no shameful stigma attached.

Elizabeth Cotten, folk/blues music pioneer, was born on this day in 1895. She taught herself to play the guitar and banjo as a child. She was left-handed but she played a guitar for a right-hander, meaning she played everything upside down. A little thread!
