I followed you because someone shared one of your posts about your children’s book, I bought the book for my kids, and you’ve remained an interesting perspective to me. :)

I live in a small town in Fairfield county, ct, not exactly a bastion of radicalism. There are maybe 30-40 people from town - mostly little old ladies and a smattering of other folks - that come out to protest every Saturday on our town green, like clockwork.

I absolutely hate that I know the response, if I sent this to my conservative family members, would be “well, he shouldn’t have broken the law”, as if that makes everything acceptable.

The main protest was considerably larger. Probably close to 1000 people, I would guess?

We had about a dozen counter protestors in a small park down the street from our protest in Connecticut, but they covered the green in flags for some reason. Also drove around the block past the big protest honking a few times.

You are my people. I have adored that movie since I was a kid. (Still not showing it to my kids til they’re older, though).

So much this. I never got around to reading Dracula or Frankenstein when I was young. When I finally did read them - when I was past 40 - I discovered they were absolutely my jam. Fabulous books.

The only thing I remember from this movie is the line “stop eating my sesame cake!” I have no idea why that line stuck in my head for 30 years…

From the clips I’ve seen, he talked about doing things like leaving a noose out so that someone would see it and stop him, and it told him that would be a bad idea, and when he said he wanted to talk to his mother about it, it encouraged him not to. That seems much closer to active encouragement.

IANAL, but I’d be curious how this would be different from the woman who was convicted for pushing her friend to commit suicide - it seems like if you can be held criminally liable for similar speech, you should be able to be held civilly liable.

I had a friend whose history professor used to have students play Diplomacy in class. He stopped that when a couple broke up because one of them backstabbed the other.

Pretty much. I’ve accidentally ended up in Massachusetts when aimlessly driving around. And there’s a spot near me where a highway starts in New York, ducks into Greenwich, CT for like 2 miles, and then back into New York. You can’t actually exit into CT - you just pass through.

The areas that I’d like to plant native plants are completely overgrown with mugwort, and all of my attempts to remove it in favor of other plants have failed. And hiring someone to clear it would be prohibitively expensive.

American cheese is more than just kraft singles. And much as I adore other cheeses, it is hard to beat it for the creamy meltiness needed for a grilled cheese or mac and cheese.

I reject your classification of that as a “classic film”.

No Miss Saigon or Man of La Mancha? I am outraged! Outraged, I say!

Counterpoint: while food I know I’ll like is awesome, it wasn’t until I was in my 40s that I discovered the glory that is ceviche, poke bowls, and tuna tartare, now three of my favorite foods. Being adventurous occasionally can bring great joy.

I did really poorly in a three semesters of college Japanese more than 20 years ago, and remember like 3 words. Does that help?

We had a ghost switch like this. When electricians were doing unrelated work they finally figured out where it went - a random wire handing loose in the attic. Near as we can tell, the previous owner started wiring a chandelier and never got around to installing the actual chandelier.

I once saw a case where the Justice needed to find someplace for a DV victim to stay. He decided “his house” was perfectly appropriate.

New York is also the state where local town justices, who can handle everything from traffic citations to domestic violence, are elected positions that require almost no training. The NY Times ran an article calling the system “hopelessly antiquated” in 1912 and it *hasn’t changed.*

I sent this to a friend of mine who lives in Staten Island. She matched with Cuomo. :(

The music and the ending - she was the only unicorn ever to learn to regret, and he had to lose his love to save her. Definitely a bittersweet ending. Still, one of my all-time favorites.
