Well this is a first. My 2004 ASR article with Nicola Beisel on abortion in the 19th century was cited in the recent Wisconsin Supreme Court decision striking down the state's 1849 abortion ban!

Today would have been #MichaelBurawoy's 78th birthday. I know all of us who loved him miss him very, very much. Ana Villarreal took this photo of him, which I love (as do many others). I'm so glad she did and that she shares it with us all.

#MichaelBurawoy, Audrey Singer & I nominated the great photographer Sebastião Salgado (who passed away Friday) for the 2010 @asanews.bsky.social ASA Excellence in the Reporting of Social Issues Award. He won. To celebrate, I wrote this analysis @soc-forum.bsky.social

Hmmm, I wonder who is behind the scenes asking the feds and IN to target Notre Dame's DEI policies? Could the call possibly be coming from inside the house? Nah, what group would do that?

Rokita threatens to sue Notre Dame over DEI efforts
Rokita's move comes two months after President Trump's Department of Education publicly called on Notre Dame to defend the legality of recruiting non-white students to apply for doctoral studies.

Abortion bans kill women. Abortion bans torture women. Abortion bans are about control, power & attempt to thwart the mind blowing success of women (particularly women of color) who excel at everything they do. If you weren’t a threat they’d just ignore you.
1/ For ProPublica’s “Life of the Mother” series, winner of the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for public service, we reported on five pregnant women who died after not receiving timely medical care in states with strict abortion bans.

These are their stories 🧵

If your "Poverty Initiative" pretends some of the key variables linked to poverty in the US and around the world—lack of access to birth control and reproductive health care—don't exist or matter, it isn't really a poverty initiative at all.

So many of us predicted this—abortion bans kill women in every country that have them. Women now also experience DEATH BY MISCARRIAGE.

Wow! So many people marching in South Bend. We're not used to this. It's usually 20 people milling around at an anti-abortion rally.

You have to have a malignant loathing of women to pass an abortion ban. It is torture of women and makes pregnancy less safe for everyone.
I spoke to a South Carolina woman today who is miscarrying - her fetus has no heartbeat - but the state's ban is preventing doctors from taking action.

She has to walk around with a dead fetus for another week so she can get a FOURTH ultrasound.

This is what bans do.
Her Fetus Has No Heartbeat—They Still Won't Give Her An Abortion
South Carolina's ban is torturing a 31-year-old mom *right now*

So why do we have to call it what they want us to call it? Theirs sounds too benign, so I'm calling it DODGY. AI defines it as: "British slang term that means something is suspicious, unreliable, or of low quality." Sounds about right.

A story before I close my laptop for the day:

A new poll shows that none of the 16 states with first trimester restrictions or near-total bans had majority support, with the lowest support coming from Idaho and Kentucky. Nearly 1/3 who live in states with bans said they strongly disagree with it.
New poll indicates abortion policy could affect employment decisions
A state’s policies on reproductive issues, including abortion, are likely to affect where people decide to take a job or start a family, according to a poll released Monday, and no states with restric...

Eren took this beautiful photo of Michael Burawoy with his great friend Erik Olin Wright in 2002. Every Thursday night after our weekly TA meeting, Michael treated the seven of us to a REALLY nice dinner (wine always included). Erik joined one night @ Yoshi's for dinner and music.
