A green lawn in the foreground is lined with a froth of water plants at the River Avon’s edge. This part of the river is more like a stream running thru the estate. But it was deep & welcoming enough for a pair of swans to make it their home. Here they’re seen swimming gracefully past, the river sparkles in sunlight with gentle ripples. On the other side are lush river plants and some small trees on the left. The right hand side is dominated by a beautiful Weeping Willow tree, which hangs over the water and is very near a red bridge that is part of the Japanese Garden area of this estate-which had many different, separate “gardens”. But it was by this river & in the Japanese Garden that we most liked to spend time when we visited. Unseen is much of it, which is off beyond the bridge and includes a proper Tea House which straddles a branch of the river. Sadly, a series of unusually violent storms, with powerful winds and an enormous amount of rain, came tearing through all of this and the Japanese Garden itself, ripping it apart to the extent that when we next visited, it was unrecognisable-we wept. The gardeners had pulled down trees & plants that were fatally weakened by the storm, leaving the area looking utterly bereft of its lush, peaceful atmosphere. The swans were gone, of course. The gardeners were in the process of trying to replant much of the entire area, but we knew it would be years before it would ever look “recovered.” We were so distraught by the emptiness, the savage destruction, that we stopped visiting this place & have not returned for many years. (It didn’t help that they’ve raised the price of entry a great deal, too). I’ve credited this photo to my partner but I may have taken it myself, tbh. Those beautiful swans & that lush garden were part of a place where we had often found peaceful refuge. To see it devastated was heartbreaking. We knew those rare storms were so extraordinarily strong they were signs of Global Warming.😢💔💚~tam💞

Leighton’s beautifully romantic scene shows a young couple, sat close together, as “The Painter” of the title is sketching on a large drawing pad with his right hand, his left hand holding that of his red-haired bride. She is wearing a voluminous dress that is almost a bronze coloured satin, the fabric pooling down to the floor as she leans in close to her new husband. Her long red hair is bound up in a soft curl that’s almost like a halo around her head. Her dashing young husband has long, wavy brown hair, parted in the centre and sports a full beard and moustache. He is dressed in a dark brown top/jacket and short, knickerbocker-style trousers, with his exposed (or light stockinged) lower legs crossed in the shadow of the drawing platform/pad upon which he’s sketching. He wears dark shoes. The faces of the newlyweds are tenderly pressed cheek to cheek: whilst he is clearly concentrating on his art, his new bride, nestling close, appears affectionately fascinated, as she watches him drawing. On the right, above and behind them, there appears to be a wooden shelf with a plant of some sort. The Wikipedia article says this was meant to be an orange tree, but its “fruits” seem metallic. Apart from a path of light which must be coming from a source we cannot see-perhaps a window or candlelight, which casts its glow across her satiny dress, as well as softly lighting her rose-cheeked face- the whole scene is in tones of browns, deep bronzes and soft gold, with deep shadows -and the couple’s closeness - creating a sense of intimacy. The painter may be on honeymoon, but that has not stopped him from working on his art. And his adoring wife, beside him, clearly supports his endeavour, seemingly enrapt by what he is working on. It’s a very Romantic scene, so tender and, we think, so very beautiful. ~💞

2005 -The world-famous, ancient Greek sculpture/statue known as the “Venus de Milo”…with a much younger me in the foreground, looking up in amazement that I was actually seeing something I’d only ever read about or seen in books. But then the whole day We spent at The Louvre was full of moments like this. And all we “stole” were a few photographs 😉 (which no one is supposed to take but everyone did/does & most of ours turned out too dark anyway…) And even though we walked ourselves into exhaustion, we’d scarcely seen the tip of the iceberg that is The Louvre’s massive collection. Had we more time (& not been levelled so sore I could hardly move the next day after so much walking) We’d love to have returned and seen more. But we feel fortunate to have seen the many stunning works of art - paintings, sculptures & antiquities - we did see that day. I will do a separate post with a decent snap my partner got of this iconic Venus…but not today. -tam💞

Since that time, they’ve come to include many wars since, a symbol of remembrance honouring all those who have served and fallen. But particularly on Armistice Day - November 11th, at the precise day, time and hour all hostilities of WW1 were officially meant to have ended - we honour those who died in that war with a 2 minute silence. Today, in the UK, Katherine, Princess of Wales, will be laying a wreath in their memory at the National Arboretum. 💜

Lord Leighton depicts the young woman, Hero, standing in what seems a shadowy window/archway, her left arm holding back a long, dark brown drape/curtain. The other curtain, on the left side, drapes down like a dark, flowing shadow and it’s to that side she’s leaning, her forehead pressed against her raised right arm, her expression one of sadness and worry for her secret lover Leander. She is dressed in a fitted yet draping, deep orange dress, which clings to her curvaceous figure. The entire painting is in shades of deep orange (reminiscent of Leighton’s masterpiece Flaming June, though darker) and shadowed browns of nighttime. But it’s the strikingly pitiful expression of worry in her beautiful, dark-eyes that is hauntingly sad. Tho today is primarily a day of remembrance in the UK & the Commonwealth countries, as an American living in🇬🇧 I remember my Father, who served in the Pacific in WW2. Though he survived, he carried unseen wounds ever after.💔💜

Plague inscribed with the most quoted lines from the poem “For The Fallen,” written on this clifftop spot - overlooking the rocky Cornwall coast and turquoise sea - by Laurence Binyon and first published in 1914, as WW1 was just beginning. Already the terrible loss of lives was horrific…and over ensuing years so many others would die. Binyon could not have known how terrible the cost would be when he wrote these words, but he must have known how great a sacrifice was being made already. On the grey stone plaque is this, best known, part of his poem: “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them…” - Laurence Binyon We must also remember All those who have served in wars since, those who have died, but also those still paying the price of their service in ways obviously seen, but also so many in ways we may not see. Poppies have long symbolised those who fell in WWI…then WW2. Around the time of Remembrance Day, which is 11th November in the UK and across its Commonwealth countries, many people will be seen wearing paper (or other type pins) poppies on their lapels or some other form, as a sign of Remembrance and to honour all those who served in those wars, as well as the many wars since: for the millions who died, for those who survived - so many forever wounded in ways visible and unseen. On Remembrance Sunday ceremonies are held across the UK and Commonwealth, with a primary parade of remaining veterans and serving soldiers passing by The Cenotaph- the great memorial in London. The King, representatives of each of the Armed Forces and the UK’s Commonwealth countries, as well as politicians will each lay wreaths of poppies at the base of The Cenotaph. Today and on November 11th…We Remember Them…We are forever in debt to every one who served, for their sacrifice. In “The Great Wars” particularly WW2, they fought to save the world from Fascism. Today we face the same ugly foe, rearing its hideous head in the least expected of countries-once revered as The Land of the Free-as well as other countries. Who will stand now, who will be as brave as those who defeated Fascism 80 years ago? Do not let the sacrifice of millions be for nought: Freedom, once taken for granted, is doomed to be lost forever. We rail against injustice, we🙏 but we must also be willing to Stand Up and Resist Fascism, wherever it is…We must be as brave as those who came before us. As we honour them, we must also pick up the Standard and Fight for those hard-won Freedoms we now seem to take for granted. Resist Fascists. Now, as then, the future of the World depends upon it. 💜

Behind a thick white railing, on the concrete edge of a pavement above the River Thames, stand a pair of Egyptian Geese, one gently grooming its mate’s neck feathers. To be honest, the RSPB & Wiki links probably describe these better than we can here, so please🙏 forgive us not ✍️ the best description, though we’ll try. They are large, extraordinarily beautiful birds, their plumage in varying shades of light to reddish brown, with black or brown ring stripes at the base of their long necks and dark brown, “bandit-like-masks” around their golden eyes. Their beaks are kind of pinkish, with black “trim” as it were, along their tips, edges and base. One of these birds -on the left -has red, webbed feet, while its mate has dark-grey/black webbed feet. Their breast plumage is an intricate design of tiny white and dark brown feathers, which almost resembles a “tweed” effect. ~💞 A pair of Egyptian Geese standing behind a white pipe railing, on the concrete pavement above the River Thames. Please see photo one for our attempt to describe them, though we expect the RSPB and Wiki links can give you far more and better information about these extraordinary birds. #Landscape 2002 To reach Goodrich Castle’s ruins we had to follow a long, dirt path wending past this beautiful view of #grasses pink #reeds 2 nearby #trees and a #field which stretched towards a #forest covered hill on the horizon. I thought it beautiful enough to #photograph Missing💚now…🥺-tam💞
The view from an earthen path my partner & I had to take to reach a castle ruin. Seeing this landscape and thinking it beautiful, we stopped to capture it on film. Behind a square-patterned wire fence are rich green grasses; a thick row of what we think were pink reeds (beside a streamlet or ditch we could not see). Beyond that were more deep green grasses in a row leading to one of two nearby trees, their branches’ green leaves echoing the colours beneath them. Beyond all this a golden field stretched off into the distance, ending at the base of an expansive, forest-covered hill, which dominates the horizon. Above is a pale blue sky speckled with a smattering of white clouds. As I recall, I took this photo with a simple, disposable camera* during our first holiday in my partner’s homeland, England-tam💞 *disposable cameras were all the rage back then: clearly a time when no one was yet thinking much of recycling.🫢

We chose this view of Parliament over another which had a vivid red sun burning thru fog. We find the soft blues, greens & pinks in this very #Impressionist #painting more appealing, tbh. #Monet
A softly blurred view of the Houses of Parliament in London, seen from slightly down river, on the Thames. The famous building’s outline is recognisable, but-appropriately for Impressionism-vague, lacking exact details. It’s painted mostly a turquoise blue blended with soft green-a colour scheme which continues through the river-in which there is a bit of the building reflected. In the foreground is a triangular, light reddish brown sail and, again vague outline of a small boat. The sky above is a beautiful blend of blues, greens and pink- we think this may be Dawn: these soft pastel strokes of colour, too, are reflected in the water. We simply love this painting for its colours more than its subject. Monet’s Water Lily paintings are so much better known. We thought We’d present something quite different from his enormous body of works. And one may remember it was an Impression of a sunrise over a similar view (titled Impression Sunrise) which gave rise to the name of the art movement for which Monet would be most known and loved. But this is quite different from that first Impression…such gorgeous shades of light blues, aquas, greens, pink & even a small bit of white between parts of the skyline…that dominating “body” of Parliament done in an almost solid blend of blue-greens, its many spires and main tower apparent yet…so softly rendered, blurring into the water itself,, with only that small, reddish-brown image of a sailboat on the Thames a different shade. The canvas is alive with colours and light, so very beautiful. ~💞

Central in this photo of Ours is the tall, rounded tombstone of English Romantic poet John Keats: born in London 31st October 1795; died in Rome 24 February 1821. This is in what’s known as The Protestant Cemetery, the only place where anyone who is not Catholic was allowed to be buried. Because of the extreme fear of Tuberculosis- the too-lately diagnosed disease which ended his life aged just 24, Keats had to be buried stealthily here, in the early hours of the morning, with few friends in attendance. In Keats’ time, this place was pastoral-a peaceful place where sheep grazed under the trees. Today, the walled-yet still peaceful -cemetery is surrounded by neighbourhoods and busy roads, not far from the Coliseum. This is one of several photos we took when we made what we can only say was a “pilgrimage” to Rome, visiting places where Keats spent the last few months of his life. This included what’s now known as the Keats-Shelley House, which is alongside Rome’s famous Spanish Steps. It’s there Keats endured the agonising last months of his life, accompanied by the only friend willing to go with him to Rome-a trip meant to “cure” his ailment- the painter Joseph Severn, who cared for & eventually nursed Keats thru those last months. We wept in the pitifully tiny room where Keats had died. Severn outlived Keats by many decades but is buried nearby (see pic 4). Many gravestones are visible in this grassy lawn, but Keats’ is covered in a carpet of 💚-shaped leaves of wild Violets (none in bloom at this time); as well as tall foliage of other plants, one of which-on the left-sports some red flowers. The tombstone has a symbolic “broken lyre” design carved near the top & a long inscription-far more than Keats had wanted-on it. The next pic is a closeup of that. Crouching by Keats’ grave, in tears & having brought no flowers-as mad as this sounds-I pulled out my own hair & left a hank of it nestled in those💚leaves…it was all I had to offer him.🙏 The overwrought inscription that was carved on John Keats’ tombstone reads: “This grave contains all that was mortal of a YOUNG ENGLISH POET Who, on his Death Bed, in the Bitterness of his Heart at the Malicious Power of his Enemies, Desired these Words to be engraven on his Tomb Stone ‘Here lies One Whose Name was writ in Water’ Feb 24 1821” Had Keats known all this would be on his tombstone he would’ve been appalled. This long diatribe not only went far beyond those last words- which were ALL he wanted to be inscribed-it portrayed him as a young man brought to an early end by the cruelness of “his Enemies” i.e. critics at the time, some of whom, during his lifetime, were indeed very critical of his work. This is not what killed Keats, nor his ill-fated-& to be frank, ill-deserved-passion & love for Fanny Brawne. He died of Tuberculosis, the same disease which had killed his mother when he was a boy & which also killed his younger brother, whom Keats himself had been caring for non-stop for weeks. It’s possible he may’ve contracted the disease during that time he spent caring-in an enclosed, small place-for his younger brother, as the latter lay severely ill & eventually died. The fact remains that ALL Keats ever wanted on his tombstone were these words: “Here lies one whose name was writ in water.” This was an expression of his own feelings that he had failed as a poet, never achieving the success or acclaim other Romantic poets of his era did. Among them was Byron, whose words on hearing of Keats’ death were incredibly heartless & cruel, saying he was “snuffed out by an article.” This refers to one particularly bad review Keats once had from a famous critic. Many see Byron as some great Romantic hero. But between his abominable treatment of women & his nasty reaction to Keats’ death, I’ve loathed Byron since. Keats didn’t live to see it, but he came to be counted among the great English Romantic poets. Yet not even his name is carved on this tombstone…😔 So many of Keats’ poems are long, but here is one short work which is brilliant & quite striking. Many of his works didn’t have a proper title, so are known by their 1st line. So this is known as “This Living Hand.” It feels deeply personal & aimed at someone who had, indeed, broken his heart &/or trust. I have my own theories as to whom it may have been addressed. But whoever the subject is, I should think they would find these words very chilling indeed… When Keats was buried, with him-into his casket-were also placed several letters which Fanny Brawne wrote to him whilst he was in Rome. They remained unopened, as he could not bear to even read anything from her, knowing as he must have-given his medical training-he would never see her again…& perhaps, also knowing her to be flighty & even torturously teasing during their brief time together. He had given her a ring-which is in the collection at Keats’ House in Hampstead, London. But as I recall reading, I believe he “freed” her of that engagement-which she insisted be kept secret anyway-before he left for Rome. Many years later, it was discovered she’d secretly kept every letter, note & poem he wrote to her…She went on to lie about her age on her marriage certificate when she eventually wed a younger man: she told her husband she was 10 years younger than she actually was…that lie continued throughout their marriage. Also, she’d kept secret from her family her association with Keats-though Keats’ friends during his lifetime not only knew of his obsession but tried to discourage him, seeing her as flirtatious & not believing her to be sincere in her professed “love” for him. Upon her death she left Keats’ letters to her children, saying they’d be “worth something.” Portrayed too kindly in the awful🎥Bright Star. In fact, I’ve read letters she wrote to Keats’ younger sister after his death, where she protested how much she loved him…but also blithely✍️many letters about the latest fashions. His sister cut ties… The grave of painter Joseph Severn, the only one of Keats’ circle of so-called friends who was willing to accompany him on that ill-fated trip to Rome. Severn was an acquaintance rather than a close friend, but he showed true brotherly love and care for the poet, advocating for him as best he could during the most difficult of circumstances in those last months of Keats’ life. As he tried to stay awake, keeping an overnight vigil watch over the young poet he came to consider a dear friend, Severn sketched Keats asleep not long before he died - a sketch said to resemble the poet more than many paintings. Severn went on to have a career in diplomacy and was much loved and revered in Rome, whilst continuing to paint. His round-topped tombstone has an easel with paintbrushes engraved upon it, along with the words Severn considered so important to his identity - that he was a friend of John Keats. Indeed, the only one who went with him and stayed with him through the worst and to the last.

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which included William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, frequently depicted literary subjects, placing an emphasis on emotional and symbolic content. Though not an original member of the Pre-Raphaelites, Arthur Hughes embraced their aims. Hughes shows Ophelia as a melancholy young woman with piercing blue eyes and flowing red hair. In her madness, she is gathering flowers to hang on the willow tree; she will soon slip into the stream and drown. Hughes includes the same flowers and plants that Shakespeare chose for their symbolic meanings. The willow stood for sadness and forsaken love, the daisy for innocence, and the violets around Ophelia’s wrist for faithfulness. The little blue forget-me-nots in the grass are an appropriate addition, though Shakespeare does not include them. Hughes adds another significant flower not mentioned by Shakespeare: red poppies, symbolic of death.” Just to add some more details the above ALT does not mention: Ophelia is wearing a beautiful, richly draped, ivory gown, not dissimilar to what one might - in later centuries - associate with a kind of wedding dress. It is so long the fabric trails along behind her on the green grass. The dress is off her pale right shoulder, with a somewhat ruched sleeve which also drapes down in many folds. Although her left hand/arm is full of the flowers mentioned, she’s also seems to be holding onto part of her dress against her, the folds gathered upward towards the wrist which wears that symbolic bracelet of flowers. We find the look on her face so beautiful and poignant. Though not an original member of the Pre-Raphaelites, Arthur Hughes embraced their aims. Hughes shows Ophelia as a melancholy young woman with piercing blue eyes and flowing red hair. In her madness, she is gathering flowers to hang on the willow tree; she will soon slip into the stream and drown. Hughes includes the same flowers and plants that Shakespeare chose for their symbolic meanings. The willow stood for sadness and forsaken love, the daisy for innocence, and the violets around Ophelia’s wrist for faithfulness. The little blue forget-me-nots in the grass are an appropriate addition, though Shakespeare does not include them. Hughes adds another significant flower not mentioned by Shakespeare: red poppies, symbolic of death.” Just to add some more details the above ALT does not mention: Ophelia is wearing a beautiful, richly draped, ivory gown, not dissimilar to what one might - in later centuries - associate with a kind of wedding dress. It is so long the fabric trails along behind her on the green grass. The dress is off her pale right shoulder, with a somewhat ruched sleeve which also drapes down in many folds. Although her left hand/arm is full of the flowers mentioned, she’s also seems to be holding onto part of her dress against her, the folds gathered upward towards the wrist which wears that symbolic bracelet of flowers. We find the look on her face so beautiful and poignant. Her sad gaze directed at the viewer, it’s deeply moving.~💞

An adult Blue Tit leaning down to choose some food from our bird table. This was taken back in March and may well be one of the pair which built the nest shown in our main post. Blue Tits are very small garden birds, with blue feathers on the top of their heads; white around their tiny, pointed, black beaks; black stripes along each white cheek, reaching back to a circle of black feathers like a necklace around their necks. The plumage on their backs is a mix of grey and pale yellow; their breast feathers are pale yellow. They have small tails of blue-grey feathers. A juvenile Blue Tit, possibly one which was once an egg in that thick, mossy nest…until it hatched, and then fed & nurtured until it could venture outside the nesting box, always following a parent’s lead to find places to feed. Our bird table is not their only source of food. We’ve tried to Garden For Wildlife - and that means shrubs and plants which produce flowers which draw bugs…and later berries and or seeds upon which birds later feed. While natural food such as bugs, snails, slugs, berries and seeds are best, we have always tried to ensure birds have an extra supply of food in the form of buggy suet pellets, dried mealworms and sunflower hearts (that’s sunflower seeds without the mess of shells). We also have a simple bird bath, with two large stones in the water for birds to be able to climb in and out. With all the changes in weather caused by global warming and humans’ ravaging of wildlife habitats, they need all the help you can possibly give, no matter if it’s simply a good potted plant that draws bugs with flowers, etc. and a dish of water - always changed, cleaned and refilled at least daily. Bird tables and some other types of feeders are a bit contentious here in the UK, as some have been shown to harbour a rare disease which has been killing off finches. We have retained our table and can only try to keep it as clean as possible, using a wildlife friendly cleanser such as Ark Klens, which is very thorough if used properly, rinsed and the table dried completely before putting out fresh food. The same goes for any bird baths, which need cleaning and fresh water, sometimes more than once daily. Ours gets a good scrub and clean on a regular - though not daily - basis. But the water is topped up and/or changed often. Algae in a bird bath is not good, so try to keep that from developing and, if seen, scrub it clean - that includes cleaning off algae from any climbing stones used in the bath. Every year bird-boxes must be thoroughly cleaned & prepared for possible use in the following Spring. Here is what my partner found last week when she opened the bird box hidden in a variegated tree by our shed, on which the box is mounted. It’s a 3 inch deep nest created by a pair of little Blue Tits. It looks a messy, though one can make out the square shape of the bird-box interior in which the pair fetched and meticulously built up layers upon layers of moss, bits of straw and grass. Its primary material is moss, though: something to consider next time you think about ripping up moss from between pavement stones or off wooden areas. It’s those places-& even moss on rooftops-where birds go to gather the materials that make a soft, safe & warm place in which to lay eggs, then raise their hatchlings until they’re grown enough to fledge & survive on their own. 3 inches deep!…It must’ve taken them so many trips to pluck all the bits of moss needed to create this. It has a deep round hole in the centre where the eggs would’ve been laid. There are still bits of white, downy feathers visible in the mix, from when their babies hatched and gradually shed their earliest feathers as they grew into their full plumage. It’s so rare for us to see this relatively intact and is a remarkable construction, when you think of all the trips it must have taken just to build something this thick & secure. We know it served them well, too, for we’d seen the parents flitting in & out of the leafy shrub-tree so many times: first to build the nest, then-for weeks-taking turns making hundreds of trips needed to bring their hatchlings food. In time, we eventually saw their young in the garden, sometimes at our bird table with a parent, gradually growing enough to-hopefully-survive on their own. These aren’t the prettiest photos, but they’re amazing in what they represent: a pair of Blue Tits made a nest in our bird box and raised their young from this. How blessed we were! 🥰 For details, please see ALT for 1st photo, as this is another shot of the same nest my partner removed when going to do the annual clean of our bird box. What I can add here is that the nest is sitting in a faux terra cotta plant-pot tray - the only place available on which to set this incredible creation and photograph it. Time Unwind - an original poem © by Mischa, as We both yearn for beautiful Summers past. ~💞 It truly is by sheer coincidence that We post this on the very verge of clocks in the UK being turned back one hour this coming Sunday, October 26th. (Yes, we will be-for one week-out of sync with the US and Canada). Free image (Not Our Photo) which shows two rows of fruit trees in full bloom, every tree covered in white flowers.
