i've been spending more time on linkedin lately, and have very mixed feelings because on the one hand a lot of the content is good and the vibe is generally positive, so it's better mental health-wise, but otoh it also feels like the least human site on the internet

the problem with being a pumpkin for a week is that after you revert to human form, your leftover pumpkin tweets sound legitimately (and not just zanily) insane

i do agree though that use patterns have changed in the direction of people just engaging less. but hard to say if that's a cause or consequence of years of brutal online fight culture

i think many social media sites boost new users, actually. it's quite pernicious, because you end up with a lot of chasing-the-dragon behavior (which, presumably, is the point)

i don't think it has to be... e.g., at twitter there were a lot of internal discussion about how to balance quality against participation in the rec systems (i.e., in the short term, engagement increases if you just show tweets from the "best" tweeters, but in the long term, everyone else leaves)

yeah shitposting is the adaptive response to bubble collapse. no one's going to try to cancel you if you insist that you're a pumpkin, at worst they're going to roll their eyes and unfollow you

but then again maybe not. i do think twitter mostly stopped being fun when it went from "EJ is going to show up and keep you up till 4 am because he's wrong and works on dutch time" to "random people who have no idea what you're talking about are going to start yelling at you"

but in all seriousness i don't think of early twitter as toxic. at least in my circles, there was a lot of arguing, but relatively little animosity—at least compared to what you see now.
(that said, my money's still on "i'm too tired for this shit now")
