bedford farms (in, uh, bedford, MA) is pretty good ice cream (8/10). but their distinguishing feature is portion size.

this is a small

no one has ever survived a large
May 14, 2025 at 12:12 AM
arethusa farm dairy sells some of the best ice cream i've ever had.

we considered going 45 minutes out of the way for it between NYC and Boston

but then i discovered there's one in downtown New Haven.

this is butter pecan, raspberry, & maple walnut

9.5/10, would have driven the 45 extra minutes

@ gelateria gentile on the upper west side

always a pleasure to catch up with @chrisgorgo.bsky.social

8/10 gelato, 10/10 company

took a few days off to resensitize, and here we are

this is the sampler at SkyIce in Park Slope, Brooklyn

bottom to top: mango, white miso almonds, black sesame seaweed, thai coconut, & ube mascarpone.

all delicious, 9/10. (the rest of the meal, including mango sticky rice, was also very good)

anyway, that was yesterday. today i finally broke the streak.

i mean, i had ice cream for a fifth day in a row. but i wasn't in philadelphia.

this is a small serving of honey and cashew caramel ice creams from owowcow creamery in lambertville, NJ

lovely town, pretty good ice cream, 8/10

i did not, in fact, start cutting back "tomorrow". tomorrow turned into day 4 in a row of philly ice cream

this is gelato from gran caffe l'aquila, though purchased at alice pizza

cannolo and sour cherry flavors

7/10, it was merely delicious
May 4, 2025 at 2:01 AM
still in philly. 3 ice creams in 3 days; i should probably start cutting back a bit. but not today. tomorrow would be better.

this is a double scoop of (1) lemon curd with blueberry basil swirl and (2) malted milk toffee crunch, courtesy of Milk Jawn.

it was good. 8/10, would come back.
May 1, 2025 at 2:54 AM
1-900-ICE-CREAM, also in philly.

had the PB & banana swirl ice cream with PB & choc dip. good texture and flavor, maybe a little too sweet. didn't love the cone.

6.5/10, definitely not worth the half-hour line. the area around rittenhouse square is absolutely lovely though
April 30, 2025 at 1:43 AM
continuing!

this is a medium gelati from john's water ice in philly

vanilla ice cream + lemon ice

i'm not much of a sorbet fan, and the ice cream was just ok, but the combination worked well

7/10 if we're being charitable or awarding points for novelty

5.5/10 if we're being me
April 29, 2025 at 1:32 AM
blue cow ice cream, fredericksburg, va. 8.5/10. goat cheese with blueberry swirl.

i thought it was delicious, and so did my wife

and i resented her for it
April 28, 2025 at 3:54 AM
napoli pizzeria & gelateria, chapel hill, nc. 8/10. excellent pizza, nice atmosphere, pretty good ice cream.

i had the vanilla custard (good) and blueberry mascarpone (good, but the flavor was a bit too subtle for my unrefined palate)
April 28, 2025 at 3:51 AM
big spoon, birmingham, AL. 9/10

we were only in birmingham for a couple of hours, but that was long enough to sample the key lime, cookies and cream, strawberry, goat cheese strawberry hibiscus, and lavender blackberry.

all were delicious. hat tip to @visscherlab.bsky.social for the recommendation

ok i know this is cheating—pomegranate-sumac sorbet isn’t ice cream, and anyway it was only one part of this labne cheesecake. but ezov is one of my favorite restaurants in austin so i’m including it anyway—it's _my_ thread.

A+, would eat cheesecake with a fake water-ice-cream hat 7 days a week

dolce neve, austin.

i lived in austin for 10 years and used to go to this place once a month, so this was more of a homecoming than anything else.

i went twice. i ate all their current flavors.

9/10, i wish i could keep coming home
April 28, 2025 at 3:41 AM
heaven creamery, cherry creek, denver. 8/10.

this was after an excellent but large dinner, so i limited myself to a single scoop of cookies and cream.

i don't think the ice cream really deserved an 8 on its own merits; i was just in a good mood
April 28, 2025 at 3:38 AM
gelato boy, boulder, co. 7.5/10. pistachio and strawberry.

i’m not sure why i order pistachio. i like it but don’t love it. i think i'd like to pass for the kind of cultured person who appreciates a good pistachio, when i’m actually a deeply uncultured person who only appreciates cookies & cream
April 28, 2025 at 3:34 AM
the screamery, tucson. 7/10. i ordered three different flavors containing honey.

“i guess you like honey,” the guy behind the counter said. (he was a perceptive one.)

the ice cream was good but not great. strong flavors, but a bit too sweet, and i didn’t love the texture
April 28, 2025 at 3:32 AM
five weeks into this road trip, i’m not yet ready to admit i have an ice cream problem—but i’m willing to share the evidence.

p.s. the photo below isn't from the current trip; i’m just setting the mood

p.p.s. the actual evidence follows

the other recommendations in this piece (the sims, van life videos) don't really do it for me, but this one resonates strongly—so many songs on youtube have beautiful, moving comments, and are a joy to read.

what are some other joyful ways to spend time online?
