🏠 Heat pumps are a key enabler of buildings decarbonisation. After a jump during the energy crisis, their deployment has slowed-down. Reversing this is key for climate, security and competitiveness, as Europe is a leading manufacturer of the technology. See: european-clean-tech-tracker.bruegel.org

3. Domestic battery manufacturing, however, does not mean the United States and Europe are nearing self-sufficient supply chains. Both regions rely on China for upstream components.

2. When it comes to battery manufacturing trends, the Inflation Reduction Act has proved to be a watershed moment in the United States. European trend is also positive, but much slower - at least for now.

1. EVs deployment represents a key driver for battery manufacturing. China is by far the global frontrunner here, while upwards trajectories in both Europe and the United States have (temporarily, at least in Europe) slowed-down last year.

In his speech to Congress, President Trump claimed that Europe spends more on Russian oil and gas than on supporting Ukraine. This is false. In 2024, European spending to support Ukraine doubled its spending on Russian oil and gas imports. And this has been increasing steady over time.
