There are 4(ish) functions to post-conviction consequences: determent, punishment, rehab, and societal protection. Hellish jails are a moderate deterrent and a severe punishment, but decrease the effectiveness of rehab, which undermines societal protection because most cons will eventually get out

Jail is one kind of punishment, but it's expensive, traumatizing, and can actually make low-risk offenders more criminal when they mix with higher risk cons. Overcrowding amplifies risk of violence, staff burnout, and med emergencies being ignored. But yet jail is the only punishment we can think of

Xenophobia aside, those 100 million people are also vital to the economy. They are buying groceries, driving cars, using the internet, etc. They are generating demand for goods and services. You really don't want rapid population shrinkage, especially among working age/tax paying age people

I am not Jewish, but my understanding is that Shabbat is like a family dinner on Friday night. It's a way to welcome the sabbath. Part of the point of the sabbath is to be with friends/family.

What part of his faith would this conflict with? Am I missing something?

Cooking can help kill it, but if the bacteria is allowed to grow on the food, the byproducts of the bacteria can also be toxic, and those can survive cooking

"The body would never harm itself" Gurl, I just bit the inside of my cheek trying to eat a salad, a family member had to have surgery for an ectopic pregnancy, and sometimes people develop fevers so high it can cause brain damage - any of these happen to you recently?

But there will be no consequences for charging him and arresting him for a made up crime. He's already been punished for his free speech

This commentators don't care about women's wellbeing. They want to stir up feelings of unease and make people scared of each other.

1) If I'm allowed to cover my face in winter with a scarf, a Muslim woman can cover her face with a veil if she wants, it affects literally no one else. Let women dress themselves. 2) If a woman feels pressure to wear a veil when she doesn't want to, is the best support racism and Islamophobia?

People aren't wielding knives or baseball bats. These citizens are recording the officers and telling them they are violating the law. These officers aren't afraid of being physically attacked, they're scared of being held accountable

I believe it is possible to get a tattoo without understanding its full meaning. For my generation, there are a lot of Chinese and Japanese character tattoos that don't mean what people thought they meant. But please, at least get a coverup once you know better

Unfortunately, you can't be sued for defamation if you are stating what the government reports as fact (it's called fair reporting privilege). It's meant to provide protection to journalists reporting on government activity

That said, GOOD journalistic practice to investigate and verify

There is probably a place for AI in medicine, however, decisions, and therefore the responsibility for those decisions, should be made by a person. I also worry about privacy. If AI works by constantly adding data to a dataset, then I don't know who else can access my data or how it is being used

If your situation is that you need to never roll over onto your arm, a good reclining chair would be good in the short-term. If buying a whole recliner is not in the cards, check out pregnancy pillows, as some shapes will discourage rolling over

I wonder who decides to call a judge on a Sunday night and tell her about a TRO filing? Is it because it's an emergency filing or is there a clerk with a list of "call the Judge if" scenarios?

Genuine question - did you freeze? Run? look for shelter? when I see stuff like that in movies (hopefully never in real life) I just think that I can't run fast enough nor predict the trajectory of crashing objects well enough to know where to go

"My career is my whole identity" looks great on paper until you can't work. Maybe you get laid off, or develop a chronic illness, or your reputation is trashed, or maybe you burnout... but a job is never secure. You need a safety net/support system and to invest in relationships and life experiences
