Update: Just finished King's Blood and found "An Introduction to the Taxonomy of Races" as extra content after the cast of characters in the ebook edition.

Seems like all non-spoiler content if you wanted to skim, and has some interesting tidbits... but also far less descriptive than I wanted!!

You may be thinking of Robin McKinley's Outlaws of Sherwood? She has done retellings of several fairy tales... Now that I think on it I have reread books by thesetwo Robins more than any other authors...
