To sum up a whole quagmire as quickly as I can: there's a whole Thing about people believing every pope since Vatican II has been illegitimate, but also many of the loudest American Heresy bishops made many insinuations about both Bendict's retirement and Francis's election--

Things to remember:

* Leo absolutely knows both everything I just said and a billion things more.
* He holds a doctorate in canon law, aka the history, theology, philosophy, and practical application of Church law and teachings.
* He was born in 1955 and watched a lot of this ^^ in real time.

In the balance of faith and works, Francis's version of Catholicism was tilted far to the direction of works: feed the hungry, clothe the naked, make peace for the war-afflicted. ("Do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God".) Not just faith, but faith made manifest through works.

And Francis's response, basically, was that while the catechism of the Church is important and people should follow it because that's what it means to be Catholic, we're all imperfect beings and none of us is free from sin, and also these things you're concerned about are WAY down the priority list.
