Funnily enough, just today I got this move suggested to me as a good example of a mechanic for retreating out of combat

from beer-and-pretzels games, through highly tactical games to genre emulation storygames, I think it's more common for something else (winning, creating interesting situations) to be more important than staying in character

not an issue if these incentives don't clash, but they often will
November 18, 2025 at 11:30 PM
so I think most of the hate comes just from how common and default it is... when it only really works with everyone on board

legit, I believe maybe 10% of the time the table actually cares and it makes their experience better, otherwise it's at best tolerated
November 18, 2025 at 11:30 PM
especially when there was no agreement to only make characters who want to go along with what the adventure or game premise is...

yeah being afraid to take on a quest might be faithful RP, but it's also annoying and everyone would be better off if the player just dropped it for 5 minutes
November 18, 2025 at 11:30 PM
it's not just deliberate antisocial behavior

issue is that commonly in the past staying in character would be put forth as the highest virtue and something you should always strive for

which then made for a lot of issues when it clashed with other goals of play
November 18, 2025 at 11:30 PM
what
November 13, 2025 at 8:04 AM
that's why I'm only half joking when I say that OSR and storygame people should be banned from making any statements about anything outside of their bubbles

especially about one another
November 12, 2025 at 2:52 PM
and also, there's obviously way more to be done in places where people are running into issues than where things are already peachy
November 12, 2025 at 2:47 PM
I believe what the game design can address is aspects of play that are incoherent, inefficient or frequently cause issues when trying to achieve what the group wants

But what people want out of the game... I mean you kinda have to trust them here, like what else is the plan here?
November 12, 2025 at 2:47 PM
so horrible yet so funny

"c'mon, just go die for the greater good of the story"

were you then supposed to get a different character or was that it, they just needed a player to fill in for the intro and then you're not needed in the game?
November 10, 2025 at 12:05 PM
I think more commonly the contentious word is "mechanics"

As in, tables are not "mechanics", they're "procedures" or "oracles"

Actually shout-out to @mattcolville.bsky.social for a recent video on why creators should discourage such behaviour within their community

Being a part of some specific niche (critters, Forge theory) can often lead to misguided attempts to "destroy the heretic"
November 4, 2025 at 5:06 PM
Sure it might be just one misguided zealot

But it definitely is more memorable than a polite suggestion
November 4, 2025 at 5:03 PM
Just today I saw somebody exclaiming that in reality the people defending rule of cool are simply lying because they're ashamed to admit that in reality they cling on to the idea of the system being completely meaningless despite knowing it's not true
November 4, 2025 at 5:03 PM
No, but people following it are often the loudest and most confrontational, whilst position itself provokes the most visceral reaction

It might not represent the largest number of people, but it's gonna be the most memorable for those on the other side
November 4, 2025 at 5:03 PM
Yes, there's often inertia where people would absolutely be better off without certain rules or with a different version of them

But that's just how things have been and you can somewhat work around that, so they never stop to properly consider alternatives
November 4, 2025 at 4:55 PM
It's neither preference nor compulsion (not sure how that'd work), but plenty of people are fed up with how smug and condescending the messaging often is

Obviously "not all", but I've definitely come across more elitist assholes than people just politely suggesting playing RAW
November 4, 2025 at 4:51 PM
Like, people will keep on saying that it's always just a plea to be considerate

I was bullied for saying that something didn't work at my table when playing Masks

Because the design is perfect and clearly I must've not been following the rulebook closely enough
November 4, 2025 at 4:51 PM
It's mostly to do with how insufferable many acolytes of playing RAW are

To the point of unironically saying that if someone used a single houserule then they didn't really play a given system and so have no right to have any opinion in it
November 4, 2025 at 4:51 PM
Correction, it should be

'I **don't** think system matters means you should never break any rules'

As in, the system can be relevant, but other things might be more important and so justify ignoring rules, that's my position
November 4, 2025 at 3:57 PM
Because spoiler alert, plenty of people absolutely genuinely believe that there's no obligation to play games RAW

And not even in a "system completely doesn't matter" way, simply "there are other factors to consider beyond just what the rulebook says"
November 4, 2025 at 3:55 PM
You are assuming that someone is fully aware their position is not defensible and so is making up a lie to cover it up

Explain how that's not a baseless assumption unless they deadass admitted they were lying out of shame
