On Wednesday, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a box truck on Morgan Ave near Cooper Park.

Members of the community are gathering tonight for an emergency action in response to this tragedy - both to honor the life lost and to call on the city to take urgent steps to make Morgan Ave safe.

The 2022 design also included significant safety improvements for pedestrians and cyclists on Hanson Place, between the Atlantic Center and the One Hanson Place. They proposed increasing pedestrian space, which today is usually occupied by double parking and lots of traffic:

This is a busy intersection where people usually outnumber cars! Happy to see them voice support for a safer, more vibrant Downtown Brooklyn, and closing a critical gap in the connection from the 4th ave protected bike lane to the new protected lanes on Ashland and Navy.

Close the Gap! Our local electeds @CMCrystalHudson, @agounardes.bsky.social, and @phara4assembly.bsky.social sent a letter to @nyc-dot.bsky.social asking them to complete the protected bike lane and associated traffic calming on Ashland Place. They understand why this block is so important!
March 7, 2025 at 3:15 PM
We also saw drivers parking and blocking the intersection, or even driving down the bike lane itself. The current design is confusing and unsafe! We’re glad that all of our local electeds are in favor of completing the project, which would help these drivers as well!

Even on a cold day, lots of people were out on the street and biking in the lane. We chatted with a number of folks, especially parents that want to keep their kids safe as they go about the city.

Our local elected officials are in support! We hope that @nyc-dot.bsky.social is able to move forward with this block. It would be a quick and easy win filling in a critical gap in our protected bike network! We will continue fighting for this project to be fully completed!

We’re grateful to @chiosse.bsky.social for no longer sponsoring Intro 606.

Everyone wants safe streets, but a reasonable case for *how* Intro 606 would do this is nowhere to be found. And more, the flimsy bill would expose New Yorkers to arbitrary enforcement.

Thank you, Council Member.
