Someone told me once that regardless of degree completed, a "Physicist" is just one who studies physics. In that context, I like to think of myself a physicist moreso than any of my other professions or skills. Which are humorous in number at this point.
You mean the subway subsidized by their tax dollars that they already fuckin' paid for? That subway?

Secretary Hegseth should be behind bars awaiting trial is what should happen.

I've got a couple that I use for college work, and adjusted for inflation they only came out to ~$5 more than the 1gb I had as a high school kid back in 2005

Technically incorrect, though I don't know of any instance where it has happened. Article 2 of the UCMJ does provide for it: “persons serving with or accompanying an armed force in the field” during a “time of declared war or a contingency operation.”

72% done with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Currently at a bookstore in Providence because I have no self restraint.

Skimming the article, feels like some economists should consider the difference between poverty and squalor. What's laughable and disconnected from reality is Kevin Corinth's assertion that the median income for Americans can't be below a poverty line.

A multi-week neglected porta-shitter at Al-Dhafra was less vomit inducing than this.

Quick question, are table tickets for the entire party (1 ticket for all 10 seats) or does everyone at the table still need their own individual ticket as well?

My wife makes more than me, this has always been the case. Though the difference was small until I went back to school, which would've been a lot harder without her help. I tried to insist on still paying half of the expenses, an argument I lost, I love her for that (and many other reasons).

Was talking with some co-workers about this yesterday, and a point was made about finding the little things and emphasizing them above the negatives. Humorously our anecdote was:

"You may have had to 'go' in a hole, but at least there was a bush for privacy, and that's not nothing."

At one time I thought AI was cool, and I was all in on playing with it. My home workstation is designed with running localized models in mind. I am a physicist, explorer, and infosec professional, but I am also a conservationist at heart. Our future, and large AI data-centers are incompatible.
November 27, 2025 at 12:51 PM
In point of fact, System76 has mid-tower machines designed to do exactly that. I don't need a climate wrecking, water draining, electricity guzzling, community ruining data-center being subsidized by the impoverished to do research, I need a linux box that fits on my desk.
November 27, 2025 at 12:51 PM
To that end, it's entirely possible to use AI, or more accurately Machine Learning, to do good science without destroying the planet (that sentiment isn't hyperbole, I'm bringing receipts at the end, climate deniers can eat my ass). Any laptop can run a sufficient model.

Further, these models have no mechanism for cognition, critical thinking, or distinguishing fact from fiction. While the model itself may not have intent to deceive (and thus is not technically lying), they are full of shit.

This obsession with the technology as implemented by the likes of OpenAI makes the heavily flawed assumption that language = intelligence. This is not, and has never been, true.
November 27, 2025 at 12:51 PM
On top of that, these data-centers are not benefiting the communities they're being installed in, school playgrounds have been closed due to chemical and traffic hazards, utility bills are going up for households, wildlife habitats destroyed, and water tables are being pushed to the brink.
November 27, 2025 at 12:51 PM
Allow me to embellish, I am not opposed to the responsible usage of AI, however large scale AI like what we see at Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, OpenAI, etc. has no ethical use case and is actively making our society dumber.
