Here's a look at Arctic sea ice extent as of early April 2025 compared to historical data. We're currently tracking below the record low levels. Less ice means the Arctic absorbs more solar energy, accelerating warming.

The Arctic is a wonderful place and I hope to be there again soon to do some research. The drastic change unfolding right before our eyes saddens me as the future generations will probably not be able to experience it like we did.

More visual: Arctic summer sea ice extent has declined dramatically over 40 yrs. The maps (Sept. 1984 & 1999 vs 2024 ) show severe losses north of Alaska & Russia in the Beaufort, Chukchi & E. Siberian Seas, highlighting significant regional change.
