@petersinger.info Having elections does not = democracy. Elections must also be free & fair. We are witnessing the erosion of free & fair elections, while rule by Executive Order instead of going through Congress is the norm. The Constitution, intended to protect citizens, no longer matters.

Hey, Jeff. I’m a Canadian who reads your posts daily and I gotta say…you keep me informed, horrified, and laughing at the frightful nonsense going on in the USA. These are crazy times. But I especially appreciate when you post actual speeches - primary sources - on your feed. Thanks. Keep it up!

I hate to say it, but you’re already there. It’s not that they don’t have the power to contain it. It’s that those who do, lack the will. Isn’t it shocking to see how fragile it all was? That it depended so much on elected officials abiding by rules and norms?

Maybe, but that doesn’t mean that Dole wasn’t trying to make it so. He was putting the racists on notice. At least he tried to clean up the party.

I think that’s the point of his statement. He is letting the bigots know that he won’t stand for it.

Wow. This speech needs to be shared far and wide. Many countries in the world are currently courting racism and fascism. We all need to be reminded that there was a time when leaders, who did not share those ideas and the values they represent, were willing to stand up for their beliefs.
