EverGrace's development pushed FromSoftware's team in coming to grips with the PS2 (and which was briefly developed for the PS1 before the about face!). But in trying out a few new ideas, it's an interesting peek at FromSoft's early history with a different, and not as bloodthirsty, kind of RPG!

Critics in general gave FromSoft's adventure something of a cool reception. EGM's review crew knocked the game for a variety of different reasons ranging from technical issues like its "obnoxious" load times to its "jaggy visuals" while praising features like its "dress-up" system.

EverGrace was rough around the edges but it also had a few neat ideas, too, such as utilizing a "paper doll" inventory system (a concept that had also seen use in the PC space with games like Ultima VI in 1990). Dungeons were also filled with action and, sometimes, devious puzzles.

Aside from choosing between two different characters (who eventually do come together), EverGrace's gameplay mechanics were straight to the point. Monsters dropped "palmira" (and sometimes gear) which was used to buy, upgrade, and maintain both you and your arsenal.

FromSoftware took a new direction with EverGrace using a third-person view and a much more forgiving approach from their King's Field series. There were no levels: characters improved with gear and gear upgrades instead and players could switch between either protagonist.
