Now, if you've become completely *sedentary*, i.e., you aren't even walking around much, that's a very different story.

Exercise is always *helpful*, and I'm *always* going to advocate for picking up heavy things, but in general people wildly overestimate how much it contributes to weight. It contributes only about ~5% to your TDEE, so on its own its absence *probably* isn't the culprit here.

I don't think it's likely this would cause a weight gain alone, though, so I'd keep an eye out on anything you may have added to your diet without realizing it. Even just slightly larger portion sizes at meals can have a big impact.

Your body adapts to what you consume. If you significantly reduce your calorie intake, in this case by largely eliminating alcohol, then your TDEE will also jump down to compensate.

Weight is a simple function of (Energy In − Energy Out). If you've gained weight, either you replaced the alcohol with something else, something has triggered a significant decrease in your Total Daily Energy Expenditure, or most likely, both.
