We knew it was time for Great Grandma to stop living on her own when she baked the brown and serve rolls still in the plastic bag.

The next year, butterflied a leg of lamb and marinated in cardamom and garlic. Cooked slow and low overnight. Set it on the stovetop to cool in ancient Pyrex dish. Lit burner under kettle, walked away. Heard strange ticking, then boom. Glass shards and lamb everywhere. Wrong burner.

Marinated a giant brisket for three days in the ancient Hungarian mixture of onions, Heinz ketchup, and a shit ton of paprika. Cooked slow and low overnight. Cooled it in the beer fridge in the garage to save space in the main fridge. 12 hours later discovered the beer fridge was broken. Compost.

And can we talk about the abominations people are calling “pie?” Even NYT is like “here are some fugly things you can throw into a pie dish because you are too lazy to construct an actual pie.” Pie crust is simple. It merely takes practice. So, practice!

Hitchhike’s Guide to the Galaxy: You have to drop the no tea in order to pick up the tea. Took the whole summer to figure that out. But then the game was over, so how useful was it?

It would be one thing if the data centers improved our lives even a little. But we’re literally destroying the earth because we’re lazy and bored. Friend was aghast that I take so many baths—while she uses ChatGPT for everything. Stop burning my planet so you don’t have to write a marketing email.

My husband recently pointed out that a key to happiness in retirement will be to take joy in each thing we are choosing to do. Including, as we call it around here, The Scoopening. Thankfully he usually does before I’ve even gotten out of bed. (I wouldn’t want to steal his zen.)

Once upon a time when I was in high school a bean burrito (extra red sauce) was 49 cents. Behind the Taco Bell was a gas station with a vending machine where a can of Diet Coke was 35 cents. $0.84 meal, no styrofoam or plastic.

Knew a lawyer with celiac who always carried a foil-wrapped baked potato in his briefcase because the GF option at meetings so often ended up being a plain garden salad. The unveiling of the potato always induced envy around the room.

The simplest version of this is toast and tomato. Toast the bread, butter it generously, put a slice of good tomato on top, add flake salt. Best-tasting food in the world imho and the main reason I grow tomatoes.

As a toddler my son climbed up on the kitchen counter, busted into a cupboard w/ child-proofing, somehow got the bottle of grape cough syrup from the top shelf, drank the whole thing. Poison Control said he’s fine, he’ll be in outer space all day, keep him comfy. (He’s almost 30 now, seems okay.)

I mean, yes, we are also meant to feel suspense that a cop is texting our lead detective with news, and Osman’s pulled it off. The light it shone on my reptile brain was a bonus.

Ironically, chocolate-covered halvah was invented by American Jews. Halvah is of course ancient. “Omg you guys, tahini can be sweet?” This is how you know the trend is aimed at white people.

My boss, summer of 2021, responding to the suggestion for more COVID protocols at public events during a wave: “Anybody who is still worried about COVID has a psychological problem, maybe they should get counseling for their trauma.”
