The book left me cold, but I found the movie beautiful to look at and strangely compelling. I was thinking, Wait, did I miss this incredibly moving scene when I was reading the book?

I was 40 when I first heard it and It was meaningful to me in the sense that it pays dark homage to all the dumbfucks who you grew up with when you were wild and poorly brought up, and you’re still alive to think about them but they are in oblivion.

The people who lived near the Great Highway liked it and depended on it, but unfortunately it was a city-wide referendum. The so-called park they have now is just a wasteland of sand, iceplant, and nothingness, and every time I walk on it I feel like Lawrence of Arabia.

Nice!!! I remember trying to see them back then, but they had passport issues and they wouldn’t let them in the USA. Finally saw them in Boston, maybe at the Rat or somewhere like it…..
