The Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices “plays an oversized role in determining how our streets look, feel and function.” My experience on the ANC 6A TPS Committee has too often included @ddotdc.bsky.social frustrating adherence to this manual in lieu of common sense safety solutions.
How the Dutch Delivered a Traffic Safety Revolution
Drivers and pedestrians in the Netherlands faced injury risks similar to those in the U.S. in 1970. Since then, American streets have become far more dangerous. What happened?

This week, the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) released an updated version of its Urban Bikeway Design Guide. Great to see some lessons in here that DDOT has already adopted, as well as more ideas as we continues to build out bike lanes in our neighborhoods!
A Blueprint for Better Bike Lanes
Over the past decade, protected bike lanes have gone mainstream in US cities. A new traffic engineering guidebook invites them to think even bigger.

Hey, this is neat: DDOT has a program called "Tactical To Permanent" and its website tracks all of their quick build safety improvements -- usually stuff like putting up a bunch of bollards to narrow a street or harden a turn or add a bulb out to an intersection.

I feel privileged to live in a city whose leaders have prioritized multimodal transit. I am significantly happier with my 20-min, 4-mi bike commute today than I was with my 45-min, 4½-mi drive a decade ago. This doesn’t need to be a privilege, but it requires our society to reassess our priorities.
How extreme car dependency is driving Americans to unhappiness
A car is often essential in the US but while owning a vehicle is better than not for life satisfaction, a study has found, having to drive too much sends happiness plummeting

Not sure which DC drivers need to hear this, but when in the far left lane at a stoplight you decide you need to turn right across two lanes of traffic, it’s okay to continue down the next block to perform that maneuver.

A Christmas miracle? Early Saturday morning, the Senate unanimously approved a bill giving D.C. expanded control over much of the aging and abandoned RFK stadium site.
A Christmas miracle? Senate approves bill to transfer RFK stadium land to D.C.
This gives the District an opportunity to build new housing, retail, parks — and possibly a new stadium for the Commanders.

This part of the Strand in London used to be a congested road for cars. Now it’s a magnetic place for people.

Good trade.

It can feel hard to muster the vision and leadership needed for smart urban change. But it pays off with a better city. Gorgeous pic by @livinglondonhis.

City commuter bikes need shocks. The gravel paths on the National Mall are more comfortable to ride than many of DC’s streets and even some of the bicycle tracks (looking at you, Maine Ave). 🚴🏻‍♂️

EVs and PHEVs count will need to account for 43% of new cars registered by 2027, increasing every year until 100% by 2035. 2027 is not that far off. With EVs accounting for <2% of new cars registered in DC in 2022, we have a long way to go in under four years… and so does DC’s EV infrastructure.
