today is my 40th birthday. to toot my own horn a bit, I'm the happiest, healthiest, and most successful I've ever been, so I'm going to indulge myself and do one of those "40 things that made me who I am" threads

so buckle up (or mute me for the next little bit 😆)

Today I learned why Shopify-powered dropshipping scams work:

Amex refuses to allow filing a chargeback when a webshop scams a customer by advertising an AI-generated image, sending something else... and then offering money back only if paying for shipping + tracking to a warehouse in China

Talking with an early-stage recruiter who work with most large VCs about what engineering hires they make:

50% backend (in popularity: TS, Python, Go, some Rust; but not strong pref)
25% fullstack (usually React+TS+RN)
10-15% AU/ML (backend generalists who know AI)
5% frontend
