Something I have been wondering - but no way to get this data: how heavy a presence were the campaigns in each ward? I don't really recall many opportunities to get on the doors in 11 or 13 for any of the campaigns, but maybe I missed them?

I agree with those points. I think what I suggested is better in general, so that marginal candidates get the chance to make their case, but that when November comes there are fewer spoiled/exhausted ballots.

Back of the envelope, Mpls had ~5% fewer votes in the final round than the first. Personally, I'd like to see an RCV open primary that selects like 3 candidates (maybe 4), followed by a RCV general. But I'm not sure it would make a difference here

Looking for other structural reasons, I think the enormous amount of money pouring in made a difference, and so did a biased mainstream media

What I would say is that it's not a magic panacea for all our electoral woes. Would Fateh have beaten Frey in a head to head? Maybe, but its far from certain. Likewise for Davis or Hampton.
