The report also sets out 10 Guiding Principles to ensure technology reduces, rather than extends, detention. These principles provide a roadmap to move away from surveillance-driven approaches and towards genuine alternatives grounded in freedom, dignity and community integration.

➡️ Technology framed as ATD is too often used for surveillance and enforcement, rather than rights-based support, expanding the detention net.
In the report, we look at
- Surveillance Technologies,
- Digital Reporting Tools, and
- Digital Support Services

NEW: For the last year, I have been closely working with the @idcoalition.bsky.social to research the use of technology in alternatives to detention.

It is now a report, written with the @kaldorcentre.bsky.social and the Refugee Law Lab:

The criminalisation of solidarity is an incredible worrying element of the EU's response to migrant smuggling.

We went deep on this issues with @gesanchez.bsky.social , @bramfrouws.bsky.social and @bernd-parusel.bsky.social in this seminar hosted by @sieps.bsky.social

Important policy analysis on the EU Faciliation proposal for @sieps.bsky.social by @gesanchez.bsky.social, a leading expert on migrant smuggling:

If adopted, she writes, "the new directive would expand the punitive scope of counter-smuggling measures"

Civil society condemns Facilitation Directive’s failure to protect migrants and call for rejection of Europol Regulation.

@marietjeschaake.bsky.social is one of the smartest analysts of technology and foreign policy (and former politician.)
The intro of her “The Tech Coup” is an indictment of liberal actors who thought they could control the security obsession - not realizing they let it erode their supposed values.

And to quash another stereotype: Sweden's Freedom of the Press Act of 1766 is the oldest in the world.
Read about the Social Insurance Agency's stonewalling *over 3 years* to make hard for media - and citizens! - to scrutinize their work

The @journalismfund.bsky.social newsletter has a quote by Helen Darbishire which stopped me in my tracks, and reminded me of how much I learned from her many years ago.

Helen left us too soon. Her legacy lives on at Access Info Europe and in many more places.

Surely they meant “don’t do anything like this”, right? Right?

Today, at the AI + Society Forum in London: The keynote by @abeba.bsky.social focuses on real concerns beyond the hype: spread of misinformation, lack of audit, resource intensive development.
Importantly, people with more resources are able to shape the field.
