I walked 4,167 steps for the 4,167 people killed in traffic crashes over the past 12 months in Texas.

It’s unacceptable that 4,000+ people die on Texas road each year. Join me in demanding policies that save lives:

Since November 2023, 4,167 people died in traffic crashes in Texas. As folks gather on the Texas Capitol steps in Austin, I’m starting my walk of 4,167 steps in Denton in memory of the lives lost.

Spooky bike ride. Have I mentioned that Denton is the best? #DentonHalloween

There’s a lot we need to improve with traffic engineering…like not giving drivers a solid green arrow when non-motorized traffic has a Walk signal.

#WeekWithoutDriving might be over, but the work continues to highlight safety and accessibility challenges for people who cannot drive.

Placing this sign a little earlier than the standards would have provided yard space for this sign rather than blocking pedestrian traffic.

From there, biked through heavy festival traffic to meet up with some folks.

Not much to report today. Not much time for detailed documenting either.

Day 6 of #WeekWithoutDriving to highlight what it’s like for 30% of Americans who can’t drive due to disability, age or income.

Biked to pick up coffee at a store that requires crossing a wide, high-speed road. Always nerve wracking. Good bike parking, though.

Made it home 1h 40m after I left work. I made a couple brief pit stops.

Commute times for other modes:
- Walk = 26 mins
- GoZone = 20-40 mins
- Bike = 8-10 mins

Yikes again.

Burrito finished. Almost home…
October 4, 2024 at 11:34 PM
Yikes, sidewalk suddenly got more challenging right after I turned onto a busy road where traffic goes an average of about 40 mph (30 mph speed limit)
October 4, 2024 at 11:34 PM
More sidewalk if I turn left!
October 4, 2024 at 11:27 PM
Uh-oh. No more sidewalk???
October 4, 2024 at 11:26 PM
Time to multitask!!
October 4, 2024 at 11:24 PM
The sidewalks lead me to burritos. Apparently I’m a chronic trip chainer when you get me out of a car. I’m not nearly this serendipitous when I drive.
October 4, 2024 at 11:21 PM
I’ve been challenged to take a sidewalks-only route. I actually think I can pull that off. Walk should be roughly 20 minutes.

Grabbed a bottle of wine and a bottle of water. I didn’t plan this ahead of time and so don’t have a reusable bottle with me today.
October 4, 2024 at 10:58 PM
Made it!! Still a 20 minute walk home. Gonna do a little trip chain detour first…
October 4, 2024 at 10:49 PM
All aboard Route 7!! All of my fellow passengers are behind me in the nosebleed seats.
October 4, 2024 at 10:40 PM
Surprisingly easy traffic passing by the festival. Will probably get worse later tonight.

Now waiting for the Route 7 bus, which arrives at 5:40 or so.
October 4, 2024 at 10:35 PM
The 5:17 bus arrived at 5:24. I guess not terrible for rush hour. But we’re about to drive through one of Denton’s busiest festivals…

Rush hour makes the world go ‘round. The 5:17 bus is still not here. Almost certainly stuck in traffic.

Denton has no bus lanes…except for one that unexpectedly appeared on the UNT campus this year!!
