Yesterday was #NationalTextilesDay. Preoccupied with a cemetery association meeting and visitors, I missed it. But that’s okay, bc at my house every day is Textiles Day!❤️❤️❤️
Four lacy, crocheted doilies are stitched to a pink, wool-felt background. Slightly left of the lower middle, one doily is relatively small. It is white and has 3-D, so-called Irish crochet roses around the edge. To its left is a filet crochet piece with flowers and a bow, off-white colored and straight-edged, ending in a point. It was probably an armchair cover. Continuing counter-clockwise, the third doily emerges from the top left corner. Its center is solid, and stems radiate from the center, ending in scalloped edges. It is also off-white. The final doily, at right, has an eight-pointed star shape radiating from the center, increasing to 16 points around the edge. The last three doilies are trimmed to the rectangular shape of the pink felt. A narrow tan felt border covers the edges of the pink felt and the cut edges of three doilies. It is stitched to the pink felt with a blanket stitch. Numerous pink buttons, in various styles, are sewn around the border. Six lines of seven black, white, and black-and-white buttons are sewn across the pink felt center of the piece.

It started as a vintage embroidered hanging pocket or pouch—embroiderer unknown. I trimmed it, pieced a background, and embellished with vintage tatted trim and old red buttons.

The embroidered Scotty dog, described in the next photo, has been cut from its original pocket arrangement, resulting in a square piece of fabric. The embroidery is set on-point on a square of fabric with red flowers, green leaves, and a sprinkling of yellow. A narrow band of tatted trim in blue, red, green, and yellow surrounds the embroidery. The embroidery and floral fabric are surrounded with a band of black fabric. A piano keys border around the central piece consists of green fabric strips, shading into red, shading into yellow. Many different fabrics were used in the border. Some white quilting stitches are visible on the piece. It is bound with a green and turquoise floral fabric. Round red buttons embellish the four corners of the embroidered piece. An embroidered Scotty dog peers over a wooden fence with its paws resting on the fence. The fence is illustrated by vertical lines of brown embroidery, and horizontal lines for the top of the fence. Yellow and red embroidered flowers grow in green grass in front of the fence. The dog is embroidered in black thread. Its blue eyes look toward its left. It has a big floppy bow tied around its neck, resting behind its left shoulder. The bow is pale green with yellow polkadots outlined in red. The embroidery is on a square fabric piece set on point, with two semi circular openings cut out of the top left and top right of the diamond shape, and bound with pale green fabric. The embroidered piece is backed by another piece of fabric. They are joined around the edge and bound with pale green fabric, to form a sort of pocket. A pale green fabric loop is at the top. Red-handled scissors are in the left-hand pocket, and a couple of vintage button cards are in the right-hand pocket. The embroidered pocket rest on a green cutting board with square grids and diagonal cutting lines marked in yellow.

There’s a reasonable amount of knitting in L. Frank Baum’s 14 books about the land of Oz. Don’t recall crochet being mentioned. Hmm. Guess I’ll have to reread them all to see if I missed it. Oh darn.

A square quilted wall hanging made with old sweaters features a red heart surrounded by irregular patches of black, white, and gray patterned knits. A white ruffle borders the heart; thin red rickrack is sewn around the inner edge of the ruffle, about 1/8 of an inch inside the ruffle’s edge. Inside the heart, black, white, and transparent buttons form seven symmetrical flower shapes. A scalloped, red crocheted trim is sewn about 3/4 inch inside the edge of the wallhanging, with the scallops toward the center. A shaded red crocheted flower is sewn at each corner of the red trim. A black button is sewn at the base of each scallop. The black, white, and gray background has quite a few buttons sewn to it. Most are difficult to spot, because the artist purposefully hid black buttons in black patches, and white buttons in white patches.

Print at the top reads “Cameo Butterfly Doily by BellaCrochet.“ The doily is round, with a white ring base of 12 points, crocheted in the pineapple pattern. The ring is bordered with green on the outside and inside. Two yellow and one variegated yellow crocheted roses are arranged at the base of every third pineapple point, for a total of four sets of roses. Each set of roses has a green leaf on each side. Each leaf has three leaflets. A white butterfly has wings crocheted in the pineapple pattern, with slightly larger top wings, and smaller lower wings. The wings are bordered with a row of variegated yellow stitching. One large rose, and two small variegated yellow roses form the butterfly‘s body. Its antennae are crocheted with variegated yellow. The butterfly is attached across the original ring of crochet, with the tips of its four wings and two antennae barely overlapping the inside border of the ring.

Our weekly quilting bee started a holiday quilt exchange this year. By 2028, each of us will have a quilt from everyone else in the group. I made “Flower Basket” using a filet crochet panel. My friend Dianna took it home.❤️
The center panel of a small quilt is a white filet crochet panel on a black fabric background. The filet design is a tall-handled basket with a rose and smaller flowers and leaves in it. The piano keys border around the central panel comprises strips of print fabric, mostly in reds, golden yellows, and black. A variety of white-ish buttons frame the central panel. More-or-less evenly spaced, the buttons are sewn about one-half inch from the edges of the panel. Filet crochet is a method where the crocheter uses tall stitches with chain stitches in between to create a grid. To make a decorative pattern, some of the open grid squares are filled in with extra tall stitches instead of chain stitches.

Voter registration tables can look
dull, so in 2019 I made a quilt called “What to Do in a Democracy” to brighten our Comanche County TX Dems voter reg table. “What to Do in a Democracy” was juried into the 50 Years of Great Quilts exhibit at the International Quilt Festival earlier this month.
A red, white, and blue quilt hangs vertically between two other quilts. It features white appliquéd letters spelling the words “Register to Vote.” The “O” in the word “vote” is formed by a lacy crocheted trim that once had a fabric center. Patchwork letters in solid red and red-striped fabrics, when read with the appliqué lettering, spell the secret message: Register us to vote automatically. Suzann Thompson, maker of the quilt “What to Do in a Democracy,“ holds the 50 Years of Great Quilts exhibit notebook open to the page that talks about her quilt. The page has a picture of the quilt, its title and maker, and information and a story about the quilt. Suzann wears a colorful floral shirt and glasses. She has short hair.
