Open streets encourage kids to walk and bike to school, increase safety by reducing traffic, and create public spaces for communities to gather.

We’ve got plans to prototype two more, and with your help we can scale up, share our work, and make the case for city-wide investment in safe streets.

Reimagining our city starts with bold ideas, and sometimes, those ideas come from 9-year-olds. 🌱 The Connaught Open Street, a pop-up park beside a Calgary elementary school, started as an idea from a group of fourth graders. Now it’s permanent.

This approval is significant in supporting the imagination of the Students of Connaught School who envisioned the road closure in 2021. Ward 8 Coun. Courtney Walcott said in the debate that it was important to vote yes to give students the power to believe they can change the world.

Council voted 12-1 after hearing from supporters, including parents, community members, and current students.

“I like it because I can run, walk or ride a bike without having to cross the road. I also like it because it is a fun, safe place to play.” -Miles, Grade 1 Student at Connaught School

🥳🎊🎉👏

Also wide sidewalks. Raised crossings. Native flowers. A chicane! Bollards are dope…
