In the preprint, we discuss means for rapidly documenting partially finished projects, as well as publishing ‘as you go’ to prevent future problems in an uncertain environment.

We emphasize solutions that can be done quickly and on a limited budget.

Just read about it! Apparently, he thought ChatGPT was a search engine. I guess this underscores two things: (1) we need to better educate people on AI (what it is, how it works, its strengths & limitations), and (2) one surrenders their professional credibility when they get tech to think for them.

Unfortunately, it's easier said than done. Although it's painfully obvious when work is AI-generated (at least to me), institutions need concrete evidence. AI use is hard to prove since AI detectors are often unreliable (to my knowledge, there aren't any reliable detectors out there yet).

I don't think they've experienced the consequences (at least not yet).

Please share how that goes! I've tried, but to no avail. I'm at the cusp of pessimism and optimism, and wish I had a better solution. In future classes, I plan to cover how to use AI responsibly, have students submit their prompts/output if they use it, and bring back in-person exams & assignments.

5/ Ultimately, this presents a conundrum for academic institutions: in the age of rapid technological change, institutions can either fall behind or adapt to the brave new world. #academicchatter #academicsky

4/ I've accepted the fact that AI isn't going away anytime soon, so banning it altogether (or implementing “zero tolerance” policies) isn’t a viable solution anymore; students determined to use AI will find a way around it.

3/ At this point, I'm literally begging students to show me they're capable of original thought. That they're a real person who is self-aware and capable of thinking for themselves (thankfully, ~80% of students showed that; they were honest and thoughtful, and it was wonderful).

2/ For those curious, this was the prompt: Write a 1/2 page reflection paper on how this course has changed or deepened your understanding of stress and human development. Did anything surprise you? Do you see yourself applying course concepts to understand yourself and the people around you better?
