I glanced up at it this morning while sitting behind my computer, working on a novel set during another highly contentious time in American history. When I looked up, I saw how the sunshine caught on this ornament—one I bought years ago on an after-holiday clearance rack.

These are hard times. Times worthy of empathy & mercy—qualities that are not encouraged as often as they ought. Qualities that are being reviled by some, even some who claim to follow Christ.

So. My Christmas tree is still taking up space in my already cramped living room.

There are a lot of stresses and fears and enraging moments vying for my heart these days. Let’s be honest, no matter how you voted, there’s plenty to get the blood pressure elevated.

I have a confession to make. My Christmas tree is still up. Is it because I’m lazy? Partly. Could it also be that I’m trying to hold onto all the joy I can? That’s more like it.
