We Are Not From Here by Jenny Torres Sanchez
is a novel that broke my heart over and over again. This book doesn't gloss over any of the harsh realities of those fleeing violence and poverty in search of opportunity and safety.

The Devil's Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea is one of the most difficult books I've read because it challenged my opinions and shows the humanity of those seeking refuge in the United States.

The light is always there, even when things seem bleak. There’s always hope. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:15

I glanced up at it this morning while sitting behind my computer, working on a novel set during another highly contentious time in American history. When I looked up, I saw how the sunshine caught on this ornament—one I bought years ago on an after-holiday clearance rack.

These are hard times. Times worthy of empathy & mercy—qualities that are not encouraged as often as they ought. Qualities that are being reviled by some, even some who claim to follow Christ.

So. My Christmas tree is still taking up space in my already cramped living room.

There are a lot of stresses and fears and enraging moments vying for my heart these days. Let’s be honest, no matter how you voted, there’s plenty to get the blood pressure elevated.

I have a confession to make. My Christmas tree is still up. Is it because I’m lazy? Partly. Could it also be that I’m trying to hold onto all the joy I can? That’s more like it.

I’m thankful for a warm space and hot coffee and a little time to write today.

The gems I find while researching for a novel.

Overthinking my 1st Bluesky post. Am I supposed to introduce myself (Michigander, novelist, bird nerd, etc)?

Am I supposed to write something witty (I've got nothing at the moment)?

Should I share a hot take (I don't like conflict, please don't make me do that)?

Or can I just say "hi"?

Hi!
