Table illustrates drug seizures in 2024 on the U.S. northern and southern borders, including seizures by Canada of drugs being trafficked by the U.S. Of note, when we only consider Mexico and Canada (not China), data reveal that Mexico is responsible for 99.8% of trafficking of fentanyl, and Canada is responsible for 0.2%. Although the amount of fentanyl going over the U.S.-Canada border is comparatively tiny, Canada sends more to the U.S. than the U.S. sends to Canada. However, if we adjust the figures for the populations of Canada and the U.S., with the U.S. being 8.35 times more populous, we see a disparity that shows a greater potential impact from the U.S. trafficking into Canada. Per member of the recipient population, Canada receives double the influx of fentanyl than the U.S. Data are from the Canada Border Services Agency and U.S. Customs & Border Protection.
